Rays lethargic question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Uv shouldn't impede the bb because the uv should be on the output of the tank. If it's a sump it should on the return side. The uv should be the final step before it re-enters the water. Is this how you have it connected, Tomka?

I think the UV is coincidental.

I've had mini cycles and noticed this type of lethargic behavior in fish - i'm always in two minds however, some people say water change, some say it prolongs the cycle.

I went with small and often on the water change personally, ammonia fades off quite quickly.

Not 100% sure but i think ammonia is less toxic in lower temperatures so it might be an idea to slowly reduce the temperature

It is a brand new U-V from Wilm. The output of my mechanical (Sand/glass) filter goes through the U-V. I'm going to see how they are doing now. (they are at my office). I'll post later. Thanks guys for the info.

Unfortunately I lost 1 of the 2 pups in the tank. I did another 50% water change & am hopeful in the morning the other 2 will be OK.

Are you sure something didnt happen to your filter when you installed the uv? You forget to hook something back up?

Ya I cant see the uv being the issue. Seems like an issue with the bacteria. Guess that is why I like a sump in many ways I can get in there and see whats going on.

Well yesterday morning I went back to check on the tank & the other pup was really struggling. She kept flipping upside down in the current. Then I noticed the large male was feeling a little better & kinda picking on her. I decided I knew she wasn't gonna have a chance in there, so I moved her to my 180 gallon cichla tank. I lowered the current in the tank for her to relax. This morning she seems to have turned the corner for the better. She still isn't feeding, but at least feels good enough to burry herself! I took one of my smaller pearl pups out of my 75 gallon tank & put it in with her... I figured a little interaction could only help her. I hope she starts eating tomorrow! The big male is already back to eating & cruising around.

Well it has been a few weeks & moving the pup to my 180 gallon tank worked! She didn't eat for about a week but started eating again & is doing fine now. Thanks for the feedback on this. It was the first time I had an issue like this with the rays. One thing I think I learned is the pups are much more fragile than the adult rays! Here are some pics of her this morning in her new home:
