Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I'll hae to call them and see. It's 1/0 gauge aluminum wire, so it was good for about 125 amps when it was new.

Right now, I'm essentially just repairing my end of it. It should have never passed inspection that way.

I have the hardest part of the wires pulled in now, finish up tomorrow. Glad I only added 100A...any bigger of wires would not fit.

Ok. Now I have a safe starting point that is the way it should have been done in the first place. Maybe would have been nicer to just put in a 200 amp panel and just have one, but this was about half the cost and gives me 2 main breakers instead of one, so I like this.

Looks good. Remember, technically, you are still limited to the amperage of the lowest rated component feeding your panels. In this case the 125 amp main feed line. So, at this point, the two 100 amp panels would not pass inspection ether.

Yeah, but the fire will be outside instead of inside...lol.

I'll get that part straightened out before I get more tanks set up though.

Maybe, maybe not...end result would be the same fuction-wise, but it would have cost twice as much. Cost is a big issue...

Two 100 amp panels might give him more total breaker space?

It's pretty common to add a 2nd panel in this way. Much cheaper for materials and labor.

Also...(not sure) but when I get an autostart generator, it may make it easier to isolate the circuits that I want to have on the transfer switch.

A few other updates-

First...I'm super excited to say that for once, my luck has turned good for a bit. My taxes are turning out exceptionally well...means LOTS of upgrades coming. LOTS of upgrades...

And ya'll know by now how the pictures keep on coming when I have $ to work with... ;)

Also...On the food project- I have finally narrowed down some more finalized ingredients, eliminated that Mazuri product from the recipe, and I have made one small test batch of the new formula with mixed results. My rays seem to like it even more than the first batch....however, I am working on a new processing method...the consistancy didn't turn out the way I need it to. I am mixing so much whole (frozen) smelt into the mix that the moisture content is too high to work with...so this batch ended up in a casserole dish looking like a layer of clay-like mud. So I grab a wad of it, roll it and press it into shape and toss it in. I believe that I am going to need to partially de-hydrate the smelt first....unless I can find them pre-dried.
