Rays on a budget- My (somewhat long) story w/pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just cave man, the suspense of waiting for pics of the beautys will be even greater if we know what they are

I wish I knew how to put into text...that game-show music that they have when they are waiting for the answers to come in...Is it "The Price is Right" I'm thinking of?

Ta ta ta ta ta ta taaaaaa....ta ta ta ta TAAAA ta tata tata....

Would some pictures of the best deal I ever got on a fish hold you over? $4 for the red head...$4 for the orange one...then $60 for the Platinum Butterfly. I bought the butterfly first, then I went to every pet store I passed for months on end to cherry pick the other 2. I don't know how I'd replace the red headed one...it lets us drop food right into it's mouth, and will jump into your hand if it thinks you have something. By eye, I'd guess it's about 13" now.

Edit- Worth mentioning, the Platinum got stabbed straight through the spine by a blue heron that luckily found a new place to hunt. It had to re-learn the use of it's tail, but has fully recovered...however, it never got much bigger since then.

After I reviewed these pics, I had to go out and look at the Orange one. It does not have a bad eye like 2 of the pictures seem to indicate.

Goldfish for sale... $1/ea LOL.

OH- and while we're looking at pond fish, maybe someone has this answer. I've wanted to add turtles to the pond that won't take chunks out of my fish. Preferably a "drop in and forget" type, but if I have to bring them inside for the winter, that's fine too...Any turtle people? I just havn't had the time to try and figure it out...

Musk Turtles?... Stay Small... Used to colder temps... and very nice Koi

Thank you!

I did some quick checking on the musk turtle, and it does look promising it stays a little smaller than the Painter turtles often found around here. But then I got to wondering...Neither one of them would be able to do much damage to my Koi. Aside from eating minnows, are painters aggressive? like will they take a bite at something too big for them to eat just out of aggression? I've played with plenty of turtles (as a kid), but never really watched their behaviour.

Mike

Its always a chance mixing fish and turtles. I have a Chinese algae eater with 2 res ears and a razorback. Now he has only been with them for a few months. But a normal pleco wouldn't make it a day unless it was 3 times bigger then my razorback. And that would only last a few months until he got tired of his shell being cleaned daily. Now on the other hand I did have a convict with them but he was a PIMA. he actually attacked the turtles so he survived till it was to much and have to remove him.

my turtles left my fish alone but ran away after about a week or so. they were red ear sliders, so just watch for your turtles running away

beautiful koi ,man, ive got a 300 gal pond right now and putting a 4,000 gallon in this summer. stocking it with channel cat and hopefully some bass

I might go to a river and try to grab some plain ole painters and keep an eye on them. Seems like they'd be more likely to go for the goldfish than my koi... So if I get them out of the river, and they leave...then oh wel...

1.5 days till Rays...

What if I told you they were "Glo-Rays"...with a little Jellyfish DNA...

Actually, that might be cool!

;)

dude thatd be awesome, think of the cash in that, as long as it was wild caught and not genetically engineered.

1 more day!!! flight comes in 8:35 pm...hour and a half drive back home.

One of them is a female Pearl...about 5"... How's that? She's the only one out of all of them coming that isn't mature....

They've all been on order for a while now...I've been very patient, I think. ;)

Mike

As for the turtles... I'd think they'd just chase all the goldfish and pick those off... and I'm quite excited to see the ray
