ok, all the flamers on dont leave anythin cause your annoying... is it possible to get a rays stinger removed? if so would it cause any pain to the ray? thanks
When I catch the ray in the bay here, I break the stingers off with a pair of pliers before attempting any hook removal before releasing the ray. It snaps like brittle wood. They will grow a new one. It is better than cutting the tail off like some people do. I caught some with there tails missing already.
You could probably pull it out but a new one would grow in its place and the wound could become infected so its not really something people do.
As for does it hurt imagine if someone sat there and pulled off your toe nails and that should answer your question.
Just out of interest could i ask why you wanted to know is it something you were looking to do?
Or is it you like rays but your a bit worried about the sting?
Put the ray in a tub with shallow water, cover the ray with a wet cloth. control the base of the tail and stick a plastic air tubing on the end with tongs.
Rays grow new stingers though and this stresses the ray, I would advise against this unless you are transporting the ray.
Nullifying the stinger is more risky then leaving it alone. Nobody should be sticking their hands near the business end of the ray's tail.
Alternatively I am not too against snipping off the rays tail 1cm before the stinger if you don't mind the look. This has to be done when the fish is fat, healthy and water in good condition at round 6-7 inches.
They quickly heal and it does not affect the rays health in the long run. (Ive had a few baby rays with their tails chewed off before I would fish them out and they are still perfectly healthy and safe to touch.) They don't need the extra last bit of the tail for the extra speed to outrun predators. so the tail is redundant. This way you only stress the ray once.
Unless you are only keeping females, don't do it to females as they need their stingers to protect themselves again the males unwanted attention.
Having said this I much rather you just take care when you put your hand in the tank and not stress the ray at all. I've kept them for 10 years without any mishap.
