rays twitching

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have thought this before and actually used a digital multimeter to check for stray voltage nothing came up i will test again tonight nice thought

i changed out my uv bulb and cleaned it real good did big water change my only other thought would be amini cycle from new rays being introduced and possibly irratating them ?? so far its stoped

Once you said the rays rear fins are torn up I know it is a BACTERIA problem for sure. This is what you must do fast.....GET TEMP TO 90 degrees it must stay this warm for 1 week minimum, remove any sand or substrate the bacteria is in there and it's causing the disk to get irritated and thats how the fins start to tear up from contact with substrate. Trust me Brent dont wait do it fast after a few days raise the salt with 4 lbs per 100 gallons and it will go away in a week or so.

Sorry to derail but.....Mike what do you rec. for Meds? Binox?

I've noticed this in mine as well.... Not torn up rear fins but discolored, noticed this after my female got torn up around the outside of the disk.

We have just figured out how to cure this with some help from Mark and Lode from Holland, The only cure we know of is very high heat and salt. I have used binox as well with this combination and it certainly did not hurt the situation at all.

HEAT 90, SALT after few days with high heat and BINOX. Whatever it is Brent it will MESS your rays up fast spot shift and fins all rot away so I cant stress enough better act quick.

Mike,

How soon after the initial twitching and spot shift / fin rot happens? How much time typically until things worsen?

Fin rot will really only happen if there is substrate in the tank and the rays are able to bury themselves. It could take around a week for fins to rot and once at that stage it will get worse fast unless treated.

Did you notice any change in the overall color of the rays (did they get lighter)???
