Three would be fine. I housed 3 for many years in a 75 and they did just fine. I am a little weird when it comes to numbers. I feel like you should always house an odd number. At least thats wheat I always thought. I did water changes every week. I now have 13 in a 220 which imo is way over crowded. They are still small so no biggie but they are growing very fast. I love my Rbs.
Go with 3 if your not planning on getting a 125. If you think it is an 90% probablility that you will get the 125 I would go for 5.

im not really a pro. but wouldnt they stop eating flake food and pellets someday?

not if it is all they know, hikari is the best food IMO. my buddy has convicts that are constantly breeding, and I get them for feeders occasionaly when they need a treat.

odd numbers? Haha. anway, I wont go for the 125. I just spent all my savings from my allowance making a DIY stand for 75 gal and it looks good. so im gonna stick with my 75.
I also paid for people to bring my aquarium upstairs in my room cuz my room is in the thrid floor and I have a spiral staircase. So I had to go to too much trouble to bring it mo my room :))

Hikari? hmm. Im not sure if they have that in my LFS. LFS here are incomplete. In the Philippines, to get to a good LFS I have to drive an hour or more to get there from where I live. is there an alternative?

well you see odd numbers for Ps to me have always worked better at least if your talking about 5 or less. That way you can always have one and only one (for the most part) dominant fish. If you have 3 and 3 are wanting to be top fish it could be a long battle with a poor ending. Or you will always have 2 ratty looking fish. IMO stick with an odd number. I ave only kept RBs for about 17 years so I am no expert either but this is what I have noticed through the years.

I meant 2 out of 3 wanting to be top fish sorry

I just prefer hikari, any premium pellet food will work, I do not like wardleys sticks sticks though. I like pellets just because it is much simpler than a specialized diet of shrimp, bloodworms, beefheart, catfish and whatever else. there are alot of people who do go this route though. but I dont have the time or money to be feeding my fish better than I feed myself.

Anybody know how i can make my manuelli more aggressive? all he does is stay in a corner of a tank and gets freaked out when i get close to the tank. I have had him for 2 yrs and he hasnt changed and he is in a 125 gal

Some interesting opinions here. I have a 75 gallon tank, i went in for 5, the guy gave me 8, said i didn't have to pay for the rest. They were about the size of a quarter then. Now it's 2 weeks later and the biggest is about 3.5 inches. All 8 are still alive with no bite marks other then a few nips on the tail. I intend to switch to a bigger tank later

My previous time starting with small reds i kept 5 in a 55 until they were about 6 inches and then i had to sell them because worked transfered me and it was too far to take them with me. They lived in the 55 without any problems for almost a year.

Every story is different. Yes i think the more room the better but once they hit 6 inches their growth dramatically slows down. I'm only telling you my story because you want facts on what can or can't be done as oppose to what shouldn't.

Oh, and before anyone freaks out, yes i do intend to put them in a larger tank sometime down the road but i wasn't going to turn down free reds either.

It always seems to come down to one side says overstock the other side says under. Wouldn't they be overstocked occasionally in the wild?

Just to chime in for your question I have 6, 3 inch RBP's in a 55 gal. Dont know if im going to sell a few off or not but they are doing great. I do have a cascade 1000 canister rated for double my tank though.
