i think (personaly) a 75 gallon tank would be the minimum for a shoal of red bellies (3 or push it a bit with 4) if you keep em well fed they shouldnt be too aggressive to each other but mind you this is coming from someone who has no piranhas as of yetAyoRaf;3296744; said:thanks. that helps alot.
are the like very hard to keep? - my last question.
kevbc03;3342466; said:I would say yes, they are not for the beginner and require more often and hardy water changes. Not to mention a well balanced diet.
*Water changes are keeeeey!!!!

a sump is really all thats nessicary infact youd still be over filtering with just a sump on a 75 gallon tank (depending on how much bio media/turnover rate of course)
Pfisherman;3345643; said:If money is a big issue, get two marineland biowheel filters, the big ones, they only about 65 dollars each and will do a good job. just keep the tank vacuumed and cartridges clean.
as for food, I start baby reds with flake food, then step them up to Hikari Cichlid Gold, the one in the red package.
Feeder goldfish are a temptation, but come at a cost. they raise aggression in the tank, carry disease and add tremendous bio load.
