RBP Not Eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You're at max capacity for piranhas in that tank. if you upgraded to a 55-60, you could squeeze a couple more in. You could go with some tetra or silver dollars as dithers, other fish movement (besides feeders) might get your fish to "come out of it's shell"

funny you say that my freind has 2 4inch silver dollars he lives next door, wont they freak out when they see the piranha though??

2? definitely. you want numbers for dithers, some will eventually come up missing, and the more you have (I believe a group of 5-6 minimum is recommended), the better off you'll be. just make sure you have the filtration to cover them AND your piranha. I'd personally go with tetras of some sort though, they're generally too small/ fast for the P to catch, but that doesn't matter when he gets bored enough to chase them like peek does.

You can add 2 more but when their reaching adult size u can upgrade to Bigger tank, they'll be fine until 8" or so. Only cuz ur width is 18".

It looks like ur rb had a rough acclimation and transit, so he will take some time to eat, I properly dripped my rhom when I got him he ate that hour, same with my late rhom. Don't offer any food at all for a couple days and on Thursday or Friday offer some and I bet he will take them.

It takes months to starve a rbp so no worries. He may eat when ur not looking like at night to.

Baller is knowledgeable and gave u good advice. Kevin is just an old fart Haha jk, he's just goofing around, not serious at all kinda like me!

Remember to change water and vac weekly.

And some ppl around here will tell u a 40b is a better footprint then a 55, imo I like the width.

+ 1

I like what sushi suggested about adding other fish. I've heard of people getting thier piranhas to eat pellets after watching other fish eat them. Might work but time is prob all you need

Kevinfleming is good peeps and just screwing around. He doesn't know how to be serious, EVER

Just was irritating for posting that comment and not contributing at all to the topic. I've seen RBP's shoal with non-piranha fish. Whiplash shoaled with 2 plecos before I got him a pair of friends. Peek tried to shoal with my rosey reds when I first got her. often she doesn't notice the food until the rosies go after it.

the blood thing is kinda a hit and miss. there's really no evidence that blood will drive them to eat more, but you will hear people say this no matter where you go. Jeremey Wade on River Monsters tested this with a pool filled with wild Piranha. He swam with them and he was not touched even after the addition of blood in the water. It probably wouldn't hurt to try it though, but it's not garunteed to work

Blood isn't gonna do anything but foul ur water and make it smell like eddies toliet after a taco bell dollar menu session. If there is constantly food in the tank it throws of his scent, so yea waiting a few days and cleaning all the old food out of the tank will help, I say by Saturday this beast of the amazon will eat!

Just be patient mate

Try Market shrimp - they don't decomp as fast as smelt or pellets. Once he does start eating shrimp he's gonna grow really fast to 8-9", if you add more P's of similair size you might have water quality issues real quick in 40 gal - chimples at the very least will happen. Go for 75 - 100 gal for 3 p's - they do like to swim and the water volume is better suited for nitrate - ppm will be on your side. Assassin snails are also good for cleaning up un-eaten food.
