RC Argentea Breeding Project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
An update. Argentea are all still getting bigger--not longer, but thicker and taller. They seem to get along fine. I removed a BIG Zonatus from this tank. He had all the rest of the fish in the top corner of the tank, he'd camp out in the middle of the tank, chasing fish around if they left the top corner, etc.

No sign of breeding. I do have 2 Argentea with light blue eyes and a male head profile now, though. No difference at all in fins in any of these fish. I'd say all these Argentea are around 10-11 inches long.

Looking good, some of the argentea and the breidohri are stunners. Is the maculicauda the same age as the rest.

Thanks, Dan! The maculicauda is older than all the rest of these fish. It's wild caught from Rio Bonano, I got 2 from Jeff Rapps. They were both very similar body shape, size, markings and color. There's only one left now.

I assume it's a female, I've had it at least 2 years now. Very docile fish.

Seriously making me regret getting rid of my Argentea, incredible collection.

so, all the fish in this tank are around 10 inches. I'd like to add some much smaller fish to this tank to have some diversity, smaller fish swimming around faster, move different, etc.

I won't have smaller fish beating on the Argentea, or threatening them to the point where they won't breed? Shouldn't be any fights or aggression problems.

I'm thinking....a dozen Sajica? And then, maybe, a dozen loaches of various types?

What says the hive?

And anybody know of any Pleco's that won't scar up acrylic?

Sajica could work but can be aggressive with each other, a group of thorichthys/Cribroheros spp might be better. Can't offer much about the plecs or loaches, I am sure there's better people out there to advise you.

Yea, but this is a really big tank--540 gallons. Think it's big enough to prevent conspecific aggression?

Do you think the Vieja will pick 'em off? If I put clown loaches, they'll be fine. Clowns are REAL hard to catch. Think Sajica are as slick as Clown Loaches?

Kept sajica twice, both times at 1 inch long the dominant male went out to try and kill the other male, that was in a 215 gal. Might work in your tank, interested to see. With enough cover should be OK with the other fish as long as they get time to settle, I would add all the new fish in one go, imo best way with a established tank.
