Re convict fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I am certainly hoping that that is not true with females.
Lol sadly the females tend to be more aggressive then the males are even tho they're half the size. They say they're named because of the colors but I say its more about the attitude. Lol they wait till nobody is watching n then shank their cell mate to death. If it's a single convict in with a bunch of Africans tho it shouldn't be nearly as aggressive as a mated pair would be.

No, I have two female convicts, who are the medium sized fish in this tank. Also I have, 3 guppies, 1 serpae tetra, 5 juvenile Dalmatian mollies, 5 assorted corydoras, one 6" fem Malawi peacock, (Photon, who is quite speedy)

and two 12" Sailfin plecos.

You can see the plecos are three times as long as the convicts.

So far, of all those fish, I have only lost 1 serpae tetra, and I thought it was the peacock which ate it. These convicts seem very timid and they hide out a lot. I figured if they were habitual ambushers that I would have lost some Cory cats or a molly by now.

Anyhow everything seems exceptionally well behaved in this tank and I couldn't be more grateful. I don't think that convicts are particularly pretty and I would not have chosen them as my own fish regardless of reputation but these were rescue fish and so now I'm responsible for their husbandry.

I looked in the tank today and the Convicts have not managed to eat the Guppies yet.

Lol that peacock probably acts as a warden to them convicts in there. And I would have to agree it was probably the peacock that got the tetra, could've been the convicts but unlikely. Surprised she hasn't got after the guppies yet tho.

I had convict females in my main tank for a while. Super aggro and territorial with other cichlids(badly injured a festivum and 2 geo. Brasiliensis) but left my tetra and cories alone

Those companies are small enough to hide from the other fish in the patio tank. Otherwise they probably would have been toast by now.

I had the same thought about possible husbandry of the smaller fish because I am seeing this with my Oscar as well.

I put several Mollies in his tank as feeders, and inadvertently included one small yellow guppy. My Oscar tore through those Mollies in about 2 days, but did not eat the guppy. 2 weeks later my guppy was still alive.

I started adding more Guppies to his tank and now there are over a dozen and he Shepherds them around.

He doesn't actually herd them but whenever I approach the tank he flares puts himself between me and the guppies, no matter where I stand.

Well that's definitely neat. Never would've thought an Oscar would get along with guppies of all things. Lol mine were all like trash compactors, just eating anything and everything they could. They were more ambush predators tho then chasers. Got any pics of your Oscar?

Well I've changed my opinion. My Oscar was just guarding his lunch from moochers.

He seems to have consumed several, and I've removed most of the rest.
Yesterday . . .

Mostly he's been raised on various worms, and Cichlid Gold + Bug Bites.
