I swear, I have the meanest Firemouth alive. As a last resort, I'll return him to where I bought him from. Other than the dithers, he was the last fish added to the tank, but seems to have taken over 3/4 of it.

I went in, and moved stuff around, breaking up even more lines of sight, adding more clutter, and that still doesn't work. He's not a hider, either. Always front and center. He'll even lay into the pictus' if they get an antenna on his side of the tank.

I have to hand feed my severum sinking food behind the plants because he/she gets picked on the worst - it spends it's entire life behind a piece of mopani, and some plants. It tries to come out all the time, but gets chased right back.

Feeding time is *the worst*. It's like a full out war zone in that tank.

ANY idea on how to calm him down a bit? I only want to get rid of him as a last resort, as he's a *beautiful* fish, and I know if he goes, something else will bully up - probably my Dempsey, as my convict is a big wussy unless directly confronted.

Tank footprint: 39" x 18" by 22"

Largest fish = Firemouth at about 3.5, Dempsey 3", Convict 3", Severum 2.5", SP's 2-3"

The 125 won't be up and running for a couple weeks yet, since I still have to pull carpeting, paint it, etc. so moving him is out (unless it's to a 3 gallon Eclipse I set up as an emergency tank for the severum because I thought the firemouth would really harm it a couple weeks ago).

Here's the tank:

JD just needs a little time to grow and he will keep him in check... I would put the fire mouth in the small tank for a few weeks to a month and try to reintroduce him... maybe that would help

I would say he is the most aggressive, because right now he is the biggest. That will change quickly.

I would second moving him out for a while if you can. He could probably even be fine in a 20 gallon for a few months until the other can grow a little

Ugh, I had the same problem with mine. I ended up having to isolate him, and then he got depressed. Long story short, I now have a 55 gallon tank that was designed just to make him happy. You'll be happy to hear I finally succeeded. Firemouths can really be mean little guys.

I would put him in a net breeder until you get your bigger tank set up. He may be a little grumpy, but otherwise will be fine. With the net breeder, you don't have to worry about water chemistry in a 3 gallon tank while you get the 125 set up.

you could put him in the three gallon for a day and rescape your big tank a little, i got this idea from another thread yesterday and it seems a good way to solve this sort of problem.

It took me a while to learn my lesson with cichlids. I don't keep them any more. I only have a jag who lives with a group of pacus, and a JD who is so calm I trust him to live with my motoro. Thats all that is left out of keeping almost exclusively cichlids. They are too much of a hassle. Their attitudes will make you pull your hair out.

I love the thread title, BTW. I laughed as soon as I saw it.

That's funny how different your fidelity is from mine. Mines about the same size but lives with guppies and mollys without any problem, I mean he's only there until he can stand his own against my sunfish and oscar, but he is really payed back unless he is confronted, used to beat the crap out of a redtailed shark he lived with.

When I added Silver Dollars my Firemouth kept them herded in one corner for a week, like some deranged sheepdog. I've seen him chase the Oscar across the tank. These things happen during the 10% of the time he's not in his log. That said, I've grown to respect him. He has more personality than you could want in a fish. I would definitely try to work things out in the 125. Make sure he has a cave or pot.

This was a cool thread. The search for the biggest Firemouth. Maybe we should be grateful they don't get too big: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=358026&highlight=biggest+firemouth

Apparently they're cross-fertile with Convicts. Meet the Firecon. They must have a wonderful temperament: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60002&highlight=firecon

Place him in the Dixie cup for an hour and see if that changes his personallity. These things happen all the time. Serisouly I would put him into the 3 gallon tank for a while and reintroduce him later.
