Ready to stuff Firemouth in a dixie cup. Help?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm the same way! I pick very specific fish, and insist on that one. I'm pretty sure some employees want me shot some days...

It will never stop until another fish becomes bigger (prob. the JD) and beats him up. And even then it will still keep bothering the smaller fish, I had never kept Firemouth before but from the 4 I got I noticed they love to bully weaker fish, but they rarely go for the fish that can fight back.

I had to return 3 of them to the LFS and kept the smallest one in a net breeder waiting for my salvinis to bulk up cuz they wouldn't stop harassing them. Even with the lights off. Tried taking them out, re-arranging and putting them back... nothing changed.

Might even return the last one tomorrow and get some more in a couple of months when the Salvinis are bigger.

I just have to go a little longer without pulling his fins off, and crazy-gluing is fat little red flares together. :naughty::naughty:

I got my new 125 painted, got all the sand/driftwood/etc. bought.. Just need to run to the hardware store and get some egg crate, and then I'm ready to start putting everything together...

I'm *thinking* of putting someone in the tank every approx. 48 hours or so, so each has time to stake out an area.. Would be:

1st) Severum (will go get a second one so 2 go in)
2nd) Bristlenose Plecos (2)
3rd) Spotted Pictus (3)
4th/5th) Convict/Dempsey (putting them both in at the same time - they stick pretty close to each other for some reason)
6th) 8 Black Widows
7th) Firemouth

So pretty much a two week process to get everyone transferred over...

Anything REALLY good I can add to this without being overstocked???

Yup.. And with my fish store, it's a good 2-3 hour process (first off, it takes me 45 mins to drive there, so I'm not going to run thru as fast as possible - I might miss something!) Then you have to check each tank, because things get moved around a lot.. :D

(They get new stock every couple days - today I found a whooooooole tank of rotkeil severums.. I think I'll need 1-2 very soon.)

You can add the severum, plecos, black widows and pictus at the same time without a problem.

Then add the convict/dempsey and leave the firemouth for last...

PS: I'd get rid of the plecos if I were u.

Not a chance - it took me way too long to find them, and they're about 4" long (can only find 1" ones here usually). Ones a *gorgeous* long-finned albino; the other is a standard - both are males.

IF they end up getting picked on (but so far, they just get ignored - they stay pretty true to the nocturnal thing), my backup plan is to move them to the peaceful tank the 60 gallon is going to become once it's emptied.

A long time to find a pleco?

Well anyway - I thought they were common plecos, my bad. My advice on removing them was due to the fact that they produce a lot of waste, some of them are up there with Oscars on waste production, and get potentially big... so you would be pushing it with the stocking.

But I believe bristlenose plecos only get to around 6". They'll be fine... most cichlids ignore plecos unless they can swallow em whole.

No.. Commons are a dime a dozen here. BN's are harder to find, and anything over 3" takes *forever* to find.. (Don't ask me why - maybe we're just special).. I've been looking for mine since Nov., and finally got them a few days ago..
