From an environmental prospective real is probably better. You are doing carbon encapsulation assuming you don't burn it afterward. You can give them to zoos after for animal feed which is double duty. Fake are generally plastics which aren't all that environmentally friendly.

Real ones are a bigger pain to deal with.

Haha, what? I'm sorry, I'm not seeing your logic here. There are farms specifically set up to grow Christmas trees, and that is their only purpose. You're saying it's selfish to buy a tree from one of those businesses when the tree has no other purpose? So, would it be selfish to plant flowers in my backyard that I'm planning on using as decoration after they're done growing? You keep fish, right? We grow the fish to enjoy for our own entertainment. Sounds like the same principle to me.

sure, there are farms that grow these specifically for xmas, that's what sounds selfish to me. planting flowers to pick the roses for decoration or landscaping is different, you don't cut down the whole plant. you only pick the flowers. growing a tree just to cut it down to be put up for a few weeks and tossed so we can have that warm xmas feeling sounds selfish to me. but that's just me. I'm not going to bash or cruxify someone for doing it, but I just wanted to express my opinion

no, i don't keep fish anymore. there are several reasons why I left the hobby. 2 main reasons was that there are other priorities in my life and I can't invest the time to care for my fish properly and one of my prize fish died. after that, I called it quits because of guilt.

If I could have, I'd rather let my fish go back into the wild. but since then up to now, I feel this is a very selfish hobby. I dont' think I'll ever go back to keeping fish. I'm still here a lot because I enjoy this place but that's it. at least if we consumed the fish we kept or the xmas trees after we are done with it, then I'd feel different about it. someone mentioned donating the trees to a zoo to feed animals, that's great, but it wouldn't surprize me if less than 1% (or around there) of all the tree buyers actually do something like that

I can't get real trees for the holiday tradition anyway so I'm settled with fake. Besides, like Liz, I would rather not take part in killing the trees just for the yuletide even if I have that opportunity.

No tree or decorations for me. If I am feeling froggy, I take out a set of white christmas lights I have and hang them over the mantle for some ambiance. I have decorations someone gifted me, but I've never used them. If I set them up, I have to put them back in the basement after....just not worth it to me. I should just get rid of em. Christmas just isn't my favorite holiday.

Fake tree. Son developed allergies to some kind of mold that is on the real trees. Used to cut our own every year.

Voted fake just because that's what I'm used to growing up with parents/siblings with allergies. *shruggs* I don't think I'd be opposed to the real deal, but just use to the fake.

I voted for real. My bf and I just got our tree the other night. He wanted a Noble and I wanted a Douglas Fir. So we went with a cross between the two (so we were told) and got a Nordman. It's already up, and decorated.

My aunt and uncle do the fake tree, but I prefer the smell of a real one :)

Fake! real one seem like a fire hazard.

I like how people get mad at the idea of growing the trees to cut them down.

if you grow trees, then cut them down, you net zero.

if you dont grow trees, and people still cut them down...you net negative amount of trees.

as for the people who say buying plastic ones are bad...try reusing your real christmas tree? My mom still has the fake Christmas tree we bought when i was like 2.

Theoretically. By my mom still keeping that tree, she didn't cut down 19. So because she chose plastic she grew 19 trees for 18,17,16,15,14...(etc) years respectively.

After having a real tree for years, I finally decided to get a fake one, its honestly much better. For one, cost, fake tree lasts for years. Whenever I would get a real tree there would be spiders all over my house, plus the pine needles everywhere. Its just much less of a hassle to get a fake one.
