Realistically How Big do RTC's Get..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok my two cents. Aka meaning it's not worth much. But I have a rtc in a 75gallon. I feed him blood worms and pellets. I keep the water at 73F. I must say the temp must slow their growth. He grew maybe half a inch in a month. And my filtration turns my tank over 14 times a hr!!!! And my water quality is perfect. Take it for what you will or flame away. But on the same note I know I can't keep it in this tank for very long. I am prepared to spend serious money on this fish. Just saying about the growth rate.

I too have mine in a 300 gallon right now and he is about a foot long. I am building a 3600 gallon indoor pond and Im still not even sure this will be enough when he gets bigger. Only reason I have it is because some newbie bought it at 2 inches and it grew to 6 inches in a month. By the way, there is a rtc near 5' at the cabelas in buda texas. He is in their 35,000 gallon tank with a bunch of blue and channel cats. These fish definitely get big...all of them.

I think half of the people on these forums listen and read everything else
people are saying and simply copy it. Half of these people truly do not
know the specifics to these species, but probably have read
a dozen times on what to expect,
A RTC should never be kept in anything less then 1,000 gallons,
I have a 650 gallon at home and it will hold one for a while,
but not life.

Not sure why you would want a red tailed catfish at all? There are many many much better lookin catfish, more active catfish, more interesting catfish, easier to keep catfish, cheaper catfish and more expensive catfish. It's not even the biggest of the catfish, a monster for sure, but not the biggest by far. So even if you had the room I have no idea where you would get the desire. Seems like a lot of fuss over a fish that lacks well behind in every category for being a specimen in the home aquarium.
I strongly disagree with you on that, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. RTC's are, without a doubt, one of the best looking cats available in the hobby, and to my knowledge, they are the only species over 4' long that retain their bright, appealing coloration throughout their entire lives. And aside from their looks, they also have much more personality than most other cats their size. If I had the 1,500 gallon tank to house it, I would definitely buy an RTC.

I'm pretty sure a temp. of 73F is not going to cause that much of a change in growth. It is most like not growing due to a lack of space. Either that or you just aren't very good at judging how much a fish has grown.

Depending on the size of the catfish right now. 1/2'' a month is normal for a RTC from 2'' to 10''. Between the 5'' mark to the 10'' mark RTC's will have a growth spurt of nearly 2'' a month in till they reach 2' (that could/will be a year or less). Then slow down in growth.

Maybe to you they are .....

+1 Respect for the animal is the first step in being able to properly care for it.

Guys, we are monsterfishkeepers. We are attracted to the stuff that most people shouldnt be. Most of US shouldnt have these fish. The reality is that we will buy fish at impluse, and when that happens...bad things result.

You might be able to do an RTC in something like 300g...but he might just get up to that 4' mark and get sick of your **** and put all 300g on the floor. Smaller pacu have done it before.

Respect the fish, and do what you would like to have done to you. If you can honestly say in your heart that your fish is happy in its environment, then good for you. If you can get it into breeding condition, or actually breed it, you have PROVED it. I setup 95% of my displays with the intention of giving the fish inside a chance to breed. Best indicator for me at least.

Maybe the site should be renamed "MonsterTankKeepers"

I highly doubt that fish is the "raised record". Especially based off of what some people are saying on here.

Everyone take a good luck at the above tank...not good. RTC looks okay, but that CK looks rough. More space would probably go a long ways for happier, healthier fish.
