so I had 4 F1 or F2 (can never remember) Amphilophus amarillo. I got them when they were no more than 1". These fish grew up and were still in my 55 gallon for now. The largest was about 6-7" while the rest were around 4". The largest male had a female that he'd gone through spawning motions before with several times and I believe the other 2 are male and female as well. There was not really a whole lot of aggression just yet hence I was not too concerned about them still being in the 55 gallon.
So Monday, everything is normal...I'd just finally gotten them switched to a new food. I'd been feeding them Wardley cichlid pellets but ran out so I switched them to Hikari Gold. It took about a week and a half but they were finally hitting the Hikari like they used to hit the Wardley pellets.
I turned the tank light off and went to bed. That night, my roomate came home with a friend from work and stayed the night <she usually stays with her bf.....LOOOONG story..don't ask
>. She was really drunk and there were a couple of friends of hers from work. The only evidence I had that they'd stayed there when I first woke up was that the thermostat for the apt. had been turned up to 85 and it was switched from auto to on so I had a constant blast of hot air coming down on me which woke me up.
I turn the lights on in the fish tanks and everything seems normal so I go to work. I come home, and the 4 amarillo are all huddled up in the top corner of the 55 gallon. When I dropped some food in the tank they came over and ate but then went back. Oh yeah, I should mention that I had done normal water changes the Saturday before...approx. 50% each on my 55 and 125.
There was no change the next day...though they seemed a little less reluctant to eat. The fish in my 125 were all acting perfectly normal.
I wake up the following morning and find the largest amarillo dead and the others now look as if their scales were melting off and they looked as though they had an advanced stage of HITH. I didn't have time to do anything right then so I went to work, came home to find another dead and did about a 90% water change and put carbon in the filter <which I hardly ever use> and added some aquarium salt. I turned the lights out on the tank to try and reduce stress as much as possible.
The following morning <today> the other 2 are dead. The apt. thermostat is right above the tank. I am convinced that something happened monday night during the drunken "party" but no one will fess up. I can usually tell when my roomate is lying but I haven't been able to talk to her face to face yet.
They were just starting to put on some real size...and the pair was really starting to show nice yellow on their black bars with reddish/pinkish around the gills when angry.
Sorry for the long rant...just had to get it out...
