Hi all,

Have a good 40g grow out tank for my sen, she's about 4.5 inches.

Parameters.
AmmoniaNitratepH
0ppm5-10ppm7.5

Tank is planted with anubias/java and tank mates are 1-inch green terror and firemouth.

Was just curious how often your bichirs do this? Of course she does it when food is anticipated but sometimes she swims so fast to hit the lid of the tank. It's concerning. Previously I assumed it was because my water level was low and the sounds of falling water was triggering some sort of response.

I adopted this senegal from another owner, so don't know much about it's past.

Any thoughts about glass-surfing / pacing ? What could be the cause of this?

I've experienced this a few times when my Senegal bichir's were juveniles. I personally wouldn't be concerned about the behavior.

i've seen them do this as a normal thing.

however, also check if it didn't swallow something - i had an occassion where my senagal was eager on eating and accidentally swallowed a trumpet snail, it choke and doing the glass surf trying to expel it. I didn't noticed it until i found it dead/suffocated the next feeding time.

So do they get more chill as they age? Glass-surfing fish tend to stress me out.

Is your Avatar a picture of your Snowflake Moray? I had one many years ago.

In my experience yes active but no glass surfing. Why does glass surfing stress you out?
Well It's more the speed and agression, it feels like she is wanting to escape. Of course it's not all the time but seems to be pretty often.

Yep! I recently had to give it away though. Saltwater became too expensive.
