Reasons to Keep North American Native Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My reason: North American native fishes have the American eel, a REAL eel that can tolerate freshwater, not some fake eel like spiny eels.

American Eels can tolerate almost anything. Have you ever seen them attack crayfish? Mine decided he was going to eat the biggest crayfish I have. He snatched him up and proceeded to the corner of the tank to death-spiral him until his claws flew off. It was CRAZY.

Back on topic:

Why? Interest. They aren't captive bred, they aren't farmed, and they aren't colorful decorations to impress visitors. OR: Some jerk in a store doesn't determine how much you will pay him because he had to have this poor fish shipped 1500 miles in a rubbermaid tub to be put in a substandard environment and oogled over. Very similar to animals. Anyone can go to a petstore and buy a sugarglider and be 'cool'. But to me an Alligator Snapper or common Crow are far more interesting.

I'm not attacking anyone either - just my feelings. All my fish are rescues (nephews net, dog, etc.) with the exception of crayfish. I keep them to clean up the bottom of the tank. They eat everything. Although (strangely enough) their favorite food is Krill. Odd, I know.

First off they r just totally badass.....

that being said it is fun collecting your own fish, part of the fun for me wastryign to catch specific fish to put into my tank, like for a while i couldn't catch a crappie for some reason! then when i did it was amazing! also i think they are beautiful of course that is very subjective, I love the variety, some of them are big hardcore predators, others behave like cichlids! Also they are tough as nails (specially bullheads) all extremely hardy fish at least in my experience. plus no heater

Oh yeah and they are badass

I love being able to show my non-fishy friends some of the beautiful animals around them with the hopes that they will in turn be a little more environmentally conscious. On a less serious note collecting natives is a great way to keep your cell phone company in business. I've forgotten to take my cell out soooo many times and then came back with a soggy paper weight. :)

Ha I have done the same thing, if you take it apart and let it dry out it may stand a chance. I have saved multiple submerged phones so far.
