Lately I've been really wanting to get a bird. I was thinking a lorikeet (I work with them daily at the aquarium, they are great. the reason I want a bird :) ) But I've heard they have really specialized diets. So here is my criteria:

1. Must be relatively simple to feed.
2. Can't be to large (Not much larger then a lorikeet) mainly because of the limited space for an enclosure in my room.
3. Can't be more then $200.
4. Must be colorful .
5. Must be able to come out of it's cage and be held on my hand.

FYI I'll be getting a handraised bird. If you have a bird, I'd love to see a picture of it :D

Thanks in advance for the help :D

EDIT: If it's vocal/able to talk, I don't care. A calling/talking bird would be fine with me, and a quieter one would be fine as well.

your best bet would probably be a cockatiel, relativly quiet, small, and handleable

A parakeet or cockatiel would be a great starter bird... my cockatiel lived until 18 and talked.. i have parrots now but i still miss my little cockatiel "parrot"... also parakeets are such a fun bird... mine would stand on the open news paper i was reading and wait for me to flip the page on top of him.. then he would walk out and stand there again waiting.. even these birds can be taught numerous tricks... and won't cost you much to own

they sound really cool! time to research :)

what about some sort of conure? I used to have a half-moon conure but there are all sorts and they can make great pets.

and here is a pic of my macaw:

the only reason i did not mention Conure was because the price is usually around $400 to $500 .. and they are noisy..your Mccaw is awesome

snake, nice macaw!! i want one but the price is high.

conure would be good if u could find a cheap one. craigslist!!

well, sun conures are expensive but others are not nearly as much. I never had a problem with noise either but i suppose that is up to the individual as opposed to a species trait. BTW, I got my macaw on craigslist for cheap cheap cheap. try looking around on sites like that.

Birds are awesome... I'd love to have some but my brother is allergic. Not to mention most nice ones are incredibly expensive.

Anyways bro, some of the suggestions above are great. If I can give you advice, I'd say do your research, explore all the options, do a little looking at the different bird species, you might come upon something real cool.

My personal favorites are toucans and Ara ararauna... but both are well out of your price range. Oh, and make sure you don't pick a bird thats too noisy, your parents might get ticked if you pick a bird that randomly screams at midnight and the crack of dawn- many do.
