Reccomend me a bird!

$200 really limits your choice on parrots.

A smaller African would fit your wants nicely, such as a Meyers or Senegal (I had a Senegal, wonderful bird). The Africans tend to be more reserved and are quieter. Anything from SA are usually quite loud. Up here (Canada) a hand fed Senegal or Meyers from a breeder will cost $4-600.

You could probably get a Green Cheeked Conure for around $200, they are nice birds also.
Or a Quaker, they can develop large vocabularies, but are known to be noisy.

Good luck with your search!

Burt :)

Also keep in mind bids have varying lifes spans.
Quakeers can be very noisy at times, mine gets real noisy if he is being ignored, they also can be very protective of their favorite people. Mine will come out of his cage and attack people if they are standing to close to me,including the dog.

Budgerigars are nice but all they do is chirp and they can bite you painfully unless tamed.lol They're fast breeders nevertheless. I had a few dozens escaped when they managed to drill a hole into the timber and clip the weakening wires efficiently.:(

i have a quaker and they definately can be loud but they really are awesome birds.
a green cheek conure might be another good option for you, they have all the personality of a big bird in a smaller package.

Quakeers are decent talkers with a big vocabulary, including short phrases, mine picked up "Stop the video I've got to go pee " from my mom. He also mimics the birds outside the house, including the local screech owl. If you want the best talker go for an african grey, sister has one and if you are not in the room you can not tell if it is the bird or her talking.

Cockatiels are great birds to start out with...hand fed babies are great, but I haven't had any problems taming them either (if you give them time). Heck find a way up here and I will give you a cockatiel.

Quakers can be good birds, but I don't really recommend them for "first timers" unless you're seriously not afraid of being bit :)...they can be very forward and will take advantage of you if you are nervous. Quite loud too, but talkative and learn a lot of words. Lovebirds as well..I'm sure there are lots of nice ones, but I've never met one. Most I've met are cage protective as well.

Green cheek conures (and their color mutations) are pretty nice, handled daily. I would avoid Sun Conures to start out with.

Senegals, Meyers, Pionus species, Red Bellies, etc would all be pretty good if you have a basic understanding of birds, and can get one hand fed. More expensive though. Here's a Blue Headed Pionus for $325? Classifieds and craigslist can be your friend here:

You want a single bird for now...no breeding pairs or anything, you won't be able to bond with them. Lorikeets are cute, and they sell lorikeet nectar, but they are extremely messy and "shoot" their liquid poop ;).

your best bets are cocketeils, lovebirds and green cheek conures and get handraised from a breeder its worth it
but you must remmeber that they need a lot of care
you have to take them out at least an hour a day, clean them every day fresh fruit and veggies everyday with a good pellet diet and lots of water, lot and lots and lots of toys and they will live a long time

you are only 14 what will you do when your in college i dobt your room mates will like a birds morning vocals and evening screams and what if things change and your not aloud to take them where you move
also you say that you have wanted a bird for the last little, how long is this? because you realy have to put a lot of thought in this I waited two years before I finally committed myself to it and it is a lot of work and they are not always fun and games some times its quite terrible he can throw quite the temper tantrum lol

what about some sort of conure? I used to have a half-moon conure but there are all sorts and they can make great pets.

and here is a pic of my macaw:
conures are great, and sweet macaw! definatly to pricey for me though :(

the only reason i did not mention Conure was because the price is usually around $400 to $500 .. and they are noisy..your Mccaw is awesome
Yeah, most i've seen cost alot.. but still, they're awesome!

My personal favorites are toucans and Ara ararauna... but both are well out of your price range. Oh, and make sure you don't pick a bird thats too noisy, your parents might get ticked if you pick a bird that randomly screams at midnight and the crack of dawn- many do.
Yeah, toucans are 10k+ if I remember correctly. :(

I am willing to give a bird lots of attention

Ok, so I'm thinking of-
Parakeet, could get for $25 at local place, really cool
Conure, more expensive but also really cool
Dove, very cheap and extremely quite, not exactly a rainbow of colors but my school had one and it was so friendly towards people
Few other options

Lorikeet would still be my favorite to have (Green Naped or Swainson's Mountain Blue  ) but I don't know if I should go for it, considering they have so many dietary requirements. I could get one for $150+ shipping.

lol I'm not afraid of being bitten. When I first started at the aquarium, I was, but now, I get bitten 10+ times a day and pooped on at least once
