Ok I didn't put the gallon of the tank because I have no clue at the moment because I bought my tank use. The shop said it was a 30 gallon breeder, one other person said it was a 36.5 gallon, and a website I saw listed it as a 40 gallon.

Well what ever the case the dimensions are right because I measured them. So what filter setup is the best for this. I keep native fishes incase that matters or not and my water temp is around 67 degrees all the time, well I hope it doens't get higher in the summertime.

Right now I got a Penguin sponge filter rated at 170 GPH but most peoplea are saying that's is not enough. Is it true that for every 10 gallons you need something capable of 100 GPH. So if my tank is 30 gallons then I'll need a 300 GPH filter setup.

Also from what I've heard the sponge filter is not that good if you want to clear up your water, with the carbon in the overflow type filter....... filters. I got a bad tan water color because of my driftwood so I need to try to clear up the water.

Any suggestion because first thing tomorrow I'm going to pick on up and also can you give me a average price for these overflow filters setups.

aquaclear 70, penguin 350, or maybe a emperor 280 - thry are all about the same price range and all do a pretty good job

i would also suggest the HOT magnum canister filter - works great plus it has a micron filter fot water polishing - does a great job

get an aquaclear 70

ok I'll get one first thing tomorrwo morning. One question though, it would hurt anything if I end up buying one rated for a bigger tank that I have incase I want to prepare for the future, when I get a bigger tank.

Nope. It wont hurt a bit. Right now, I'm using a fluval 404 w/ aquaclear 70 on a 30g tank. Hehe

You can't overbuild peace of mind. .. Also an Emperor 400 @ 400 gph with the bio- wheels and baskets would be an inexpensive and efficient filter. Just my 2 rubles.

if u got the extra dough just get the aquaclear 110....that way if u do decided to upgrade later that filter can handle a bigger load than the 70.....you can never have to much filtration

Ok so the major players are:

Aqua clear
Marineland Penguin
emperior

Which do you guys think is the better brand in general for all sizes. I'll have to think if I want it for this tank only or for the future but I just don't want to get a brand that's generic.
