Ok so the major players are:

Aqua clear
Marineland Penguin
emperior

Which do you guys think is the better brand in general for all sizes. I'll have to think if I want it for this tank only or for the future but I just don't want to get a brand that's generic.
Aqua clear

dam answer came a little too late because I just bought a Marineland Penguin 200 filter that's good for up to 50 gallons.

I chose it because of the bio wheel which some people prefer.

Is this a good buy or should I return it, if I can.

Up to you but I would go for the Aquaclear. Those biowheels just add noise to the tank. You can get enough bio filtration from the sponges in the AC.

Noise huh, you are right.

I got my tank in my room and it's too noisy, I guess another mistake I've made being a newbie.

On my 30g I use an Eheim ecco 2231 and a Penguin 350 .......abt 500gph total.

but I would go with an AC 110, I use 1 on my 100g with a magnum 350..... abt 850 gph total

Don't worry man, I made that mistake too.

Let's see if I can go to sleep with the water noise on. Last night was the first night but I was drunk and knocked out right away. Tonight will be a test if the water noise is too much for me.

I might have to shut the MarineLand bio -wheels filter down at night and only leave the penguin sponge filter on at night.

Well I didn't like the Marineland at all so I returned it and got the Aqua clear 200. I'm still treating my water for ICH right now so I'll try it out in a few days. I hope it's quieter because those bio-wheel filters are loud.

  I might be a bit of a 'HAGEN' fanatic!! On my 110g - '110' & Fluval 404, 75g - [2] '110's, 55g - '110' & 29g sic/obsv tnk I have [2] '70's. They've been reliable for the most part & replacement parts are available both on-line & at your LFS. The price is not too steep & the flexibility 4 various filter media is great!!
Peace, MONEY
