Recovered Gamers

I rarely played online, because I always had a hot PC, but a slow connection. I only had a 33.6 modem in ‘96.

Mostly I played FPS games and adventure games, but also lots of war simulations.

I can’t remember all 200+, and not all were that memorable, but I did like (in no particular order…)

The 11th hour
The 7th Guest
All the Myst games thru Uru
Riven
Syberia
All the Duke Nukem 3D games
Doom, Doom2
Unreal 1,2
The Serious Sam games
Hexen, Heretic, Blood 1, 2, 3
Descent, D2, Freespace
Terminal Velocity
Fury3
The Roger Wilco games
Normality
The Tex Murphy games
The Inca games
Burn Cycle
Qin
Deus Ex
Warcraft
Minecraft
Spacecraft
Lords of Might & Magic
The Zork games
Stronghold 1,2
Stronghold Crusader
Starship Titanic
Revolution
Fantastic Contraption 1,2

Games I never finished but wanted too:

Marathon (too long)
The Hive (too hard)
The Raven Project (crashed)
Lemmings (code lost)

Eehhh… not that good….

The Alien games (glitchy, fuzzy, uninventive)
The Journeyman project 1,2,3 (deravitive)
Titanic (great model! game slow witted)
Alone in the Dark 1&2 (clunky, dull)
Phantasmagoria V (disappointing end)
Timelapse (derivative)

Totally unplayable drek:

Battlecruiser 3000AD (b o r i n g)
Cyberbikes (graphic garbage)
Alone in the dark 3 (bleah…s.o.s.)
Iron Assault (hung regularly)

As a test of my memory, this was tough.
I haven’t played many of those since the mid 90s. But many in the middle were the least memorable.

If I remember more I may add to this list. No way will I cheat by looking in the attic. All are well burried.

Descent: freespace is one of the legendary series of our times imo. So much from those games have been reiterated since. Space sims are almost nonexistent now, and when they are, just updated versions of the millenia long terran-vasudan-shivan conflict. I sincerely miss the old volition games. Those were times of real expression in gaming.

The two games that I made a lot of levels for were Duke Nukem 3-D and Descent: Destination Saturn. I did several Duke Nukem levels based on buildings that we did in our engineering office.

I decided that I enjoyed playing these games more than I enjoyed building them so I only did that for a couple years.
