anyone ever tried feeding the aro live grey prawns?those u get from fishing shops. i heard its good and the excitement for feeding is there.the live saltwater prawn is able to withstand freshwater for at least 1-2 hours before it dies. the arowana will just grab it and fight it to swallow it down.of cos u have to remove the spike at the prawn's head first and also the tail. the carotene comes from the prawn's shell.i know of a guy who fed his red aro that for 6 months and the aro grew from 12 inch to 20 inch in 6 mths.no kidding,in a 6ft tank.so the aro have to eat the shell together too for it to enhance colour, thats why i dun believe in those hikari pellets or aro pellets,i believe in real live food.

Hey guys just wondering what you feed your Red Arowana be it chili red, super red, violet fusion super red, emperor red etc.Mines a chili red. i feed mine on a diet of market prawns only, cuz i heard its a good source of carotene for the arowana colour development.once a while like once a month i feed it centipede i get from my LFS in Singapore at $1.50 per piece.and does anyone know whether the food it eats or the lighting that enchances it colour development?cuz i have mine for almost a year now i switch on my flourescent light 24/7,and the colour never disappears,if i switch if off for like an hour or so,the colour fades but once i turn it on again the colour comes back.

If you know what you are going to feed why even bother to start a thread about what to feed?

Fish in the wild eat a variety of different prey and when they consume the prey they also get whatever is in the stomach of that prey. So even large predatory fish get a certain amount of vegetable matter in their diet. A quality pellet will provide the balanced nutrition your fish needs but he won't eat them if you just feed live food and prawns. Its like offering a 3yr old a chocolate bar or a piece of brocoli. I'd get him on a good quality pellet and add gut loaded live food items if you feel its necessary. My RTG was 17" when I got him and it took him 24 days to eat pellets because he was used to a diet of prawns. They will eat pellets if you are patient. Fish food nutrition has come a long ways and some of the higher end foods offer an very balanced diet. Much like dog and cat food , the brand you choose will depend on availability and personal preference. I won't say what brand I use because I don't want to get into a debate over what's the best food but research fish nutrition and make up your own mind.

the performance of a red is almost on its gene instead of diet.. and i suggest pellets

so it is possible if i feed those feeder fish pellets or vegetables and later feed them to my arowana to ensure it has a balanced nutrition? cool. i shall give it a try. to train my arowana to feed on pellets is a bit weird cuz i know in the wild aros eat live food.i thought those pellet food are for kois and goldfishes mostly only.

if you want, you could buy superworms and gutload it with carrots.. it would not matter whether what kind of aro it is. but koji is right, just like the kok and pearls in flowerhorn, no matter what type of food you feed it, it would only help a little.. tha main factor is the genes of the fish..

thats what i do just feed super worms nothing else you can feed the worms anything you want beforefeeding them to the aro

the super worms eat carrot, apple, cucumber.pellets, spiralina flake food basically anything you want your aro to eat

Dam am I the only person in Hawaii without an asian. Anyways like above it depends on your aros genes. You might be feeding all the top foods but your aro might not have much potential.

agree with koji that genes are a huge factor in determining the coloration. However i personally feel feeding a variety of food is better for the aros than just one food source (shrimps)....
