red-bellied pacu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
personally i found that they hate each other only.peaceful towards non pacus
huge fish.needs a gigantic tank to accommodate properly
huge diet.they wont stop eating.will eat anything[rubber for example]
can break tanks glass when spooked.
grow insanely fast.
very hardy.but cant take chlorine for sh!!!t

the pacu i have is in a 220 gal. with 6 silver dollars.not aggressive at all.maybe a Little pushy at feeding time.yea they get big she is a year old and a good 19 inches.but very nice fish.she was pretty skittish for the first 6-mos or so but she calmed down.i wouldn't get anything smaller than 220 for one fish, they are schooling fish but you would need a lots of gal for more than one.she seems fine with the few Little buddies she has to play with.all of witch have their fins,no nipping....

I had one when I got my first 55gal with some oscars and other SA cichlids. Never hurt anything, but could eat so much so fast it was damn near impossible for the other fish in the tank to eat. After a year or so it got ridiculous, so I donated him to my LFS. He got a new home in a pond.

Huge tank, sometimes fight each other unless in groups of at least 3, eat smaller fish.

I have 2 20 inchers. They never fight . never chase each other. They don't bother any other fish and won't even look at feeders. They eat frozen shrimp, scallops, crayfish, fruits and veggies. They also eat live shrimp and live crayfish. Mine have been in a 400 gallon rubber lined pond for 3 years and never even look interested in the liner. Also you control their food intake not the fish. People who say they eat none stop are right because fish are opportunistic feeders and almost all fish will eat something anytime you offer it to them. Its like a kid you don't keep giving it food because it eats it.

My neighbors had two, and they ate holes in their pond liner. They were HUGE when they got rid of them.

I personally love pacus they have good fish personality easy to keep and grow like weeds I had 4 the size of fring pans when I moved to Ga. Bad water killed them as well as 2 20 inch rtc and other fish. The three RPs I have now I have had for less then 5 months and I bought them at Wal Mart and they are about 8 inches. Will sink thier teeth in a minnow or two or three or more I recently picked up a black pacu that a LFS had as a silver dollar one look at him and Ray Charles could have seen that it was not a silver $. Another LFS has 2 24 inchers that they wanted $50 for. I told them I would take them off their hands when they were giving them away. just a couple days ago they had them on "Special" for $40

Pacu's are gental giants. I love them. Mine 20" one just died because of me. R.I.P. Was sorta my fault but I miss him. He started picking on my Silver Arowana but still was a gental giant.
