Red belly Pacu breeding questions...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All you guys crying about pacus. Just fire up the grill when they get too big. As long as you've never treated them with meds it's okay to eat. Good too. Check google there are people who actually recommend this as an alternative to just killing them.

public aquariums will always take em, or some people with massive aquariums.
How wrong you are...

Public Aquariums are the least likely groups to rescue animals, let alone ones so common and fast growing as Pacus. When a Public Aquariums has a hundred million dollars invested into their setup and livestock- they will not risk it for a free Pacu.

And as members on this site have witnessed many many times of many years, it's not so simple to give away a pacu. Check for yourself in the Buy and Sell Forum. There are several FREE ads for pacus that have been up for longer than a month or two where the owners has been unssuccessful in finding a home larger than the fish is in now.

It is a shame, these beasts of Fish are quite beautiful, and can adopt a rather "intelligent-like" personality. They do deserve more than what is commonly given to them.

I have seen pacu breeding facilities in Brazil, fished from them too... All the ponds were 1 acre or more by my best rough guess. Big enough to cast just to the middle or a little past with a normal lure. pacu do taste great but only if their water has been clean, otherwise their fatty dorsal absorbs all the crappy taste from the crap in the water.

I inherited 3 small red bellied pacu from a neighbor when they moved. Did research and obviously found out they quickly outgrow a tank. (Stores should never be allowed to sell these). They are nice fish, but WAY too big for my 42 gallon tank. I am in the Cleveland area and would like to find a suitable home for them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would consider donating the 42 gallon tank if someone has a MUCH larger tank for them to live out their life in. I don't want to post any general ads on a regular website for fear someone will want a free tank and just kill the fish or just keep them in the 42 gallon. They are now about 6-8", so I want to find a home for them quickly before they get hurt.

Thanks!
