Ive only had fish for about 5 months so i am pretty new to the hobby. I started out with the red devil and red terror (i though he was a red terror because he sold under that name) in a 40 gallon. When the red devil started attacking the barred midas I made a separator. At that time the red devil was bigger than the barred midas. A week ago i got a 130 gallon (76 long 18 wide 22 tall). The red terror is now around 6 inchs and the red devil is 4-5 inchs. When i first put them in this tank the midas was attacking the red devil like crazy. After two days he stopped and the midas was just following the red devil every where. This week they seemed to be obsessed with one area of the tank. This morning the red devil was digging a hole next to a rock in this area while the midas was by her side watching. About an hour ago the red devil started laying eggs and the red terror fertilized them. I have a pike cichlid and a pleco in the tank with them. I have a few questions. How long until the eggs hatch? If they do have babys i still have my 40 gallon tank that ld use to put the fry in. What will the fry look like? Here are some pictures.

I'm not 100% sure those are fertilized, you may have 2 females. When the eggs are fertilized they will be brown, when they're not fertilized or they're "bad eggs" they are usually white. If they are fertilized they should hatch in 2-4 days. Once they hatch the tails will emerge and they will wiggle around on the bottom of the tank for another 4-5 days as "wrigglers." After this they should be free swimming and will look somthing like this (although these are convicts, they won't look much different as fry.)

You'd probably be a lot better off moving the other fish (pike and pleco) than you would be catching all the fry. If you do want to move the fry I suggest getting a 10gallon ($10 at walmart), the biggest sponge filter you can find, and a heater. With lots of water changes this is the best and safest fry tank you can have. But if you decide to keep them in the big tank these two should be good parents if they are in fact a pair. They will probably attack anything that comes near their eggs or fry (fry = baby fish.) When they are in the wriggler stage they will live off of their eggsack but once they're free swimming you will need to start feeding them. The easiest thing to feed them is either finely crushed flake and/or pellets, or if you can find it around you baby brine shrimp (bbs.)

If you've got any other questions just ask, hopefully all of this helps for now.

p.s. "red terror" refers to a totally different species of fish known as the festae so either call it a red devil or amphilophus labiatus so you don't confuse people.

Thanks that helps alot. I hope they are fertilized. I saw the red devil laying the eggs and after the barred midas would go and rub his genital on the eggs so im guessing he was fertilizing them. The reason i called it a red terror was because the pet store sold it under that name but now im positive its a midas sorry for the confusion.

no problem, its hard to tell if they are fertilized from just a picture but lets hope they are. Did their tubes look different? If it looked like the barred midas was fertilizing them he probably was. Remember not to spread them around the hobby though, they're hybrids even if they are closely related. You could either give them away/sell them to responsile hobbyists, keep them yourself, or feed them to something.

Chances are that your "red devil is a midas/red devil hybrid anyways. Unless you get them from a reputable source you'll never know. The barred midas is probably pure, since they only have barring when they're closely related to the wild. Forgot to mention, yours looks like a male because of the longer fins. Hes a very nice midas too, keep us updated on him.

thats a nice mayan. Mayans are red terror's, so are festae, thats why you can't go by common names.
