MDH I also should have mentioned, some of these guys say that tank size has minimal effect in growth. Well thats a load of crap. How many times I have walked past fish stores with those 15 gallon tanks and 30 gallon tanks and fish have there faces flat and backs arched because they grow all screwed up from the tank size. Then you have Oscars with HITH and and laying on there sides. But your right the tank has nothing to do with it. Ya your right if you have a 30 gallon and your doing 100% wc every day then maybe not so much.

You want to know why these fish in pet stores are stunted, and look like that? Water quality, my friend ;)

If your philosophy holds true, then explain the guy with the 18" dovii in the 90g? Think the dovii has alot of turning room in there? Pretty healthy looking fish to me.

An 18" fish in 4 foot by 18" tank is not even close to a 12" fish in a 12" by 30" tank.

I've had my Red Devil for a little less than a year and he has gone from about 4 inches to about 9 inches. He's in a 60gal acryllic and happy but Im thinking I'll have to upgrade at some point. Incidentally, what are you guys feeding your RDs cuz mine has become a bit more finicky eater and definately eats less of what he does eat. Should I be worried?

Mine did that a while back so I started varying her diet. She's taking cichlid pellets, shrimp pellets, and picks off about 4 or 5 of my dithers/feeders a week.

Apart from the volume of water they are actually very similar an 18" fish in a 48" (4 ft) by 18" tank will have only its body length to turn around in and 2.6 times its body length to swim in.
A 12" fish in a 30" by 12" tank will have only its body length to turn around in and 2.5 times its body length to swim in.
