Red Devil or Midas, vs a Jag

What's up all-

I have this 125 Running with a

JD
Texas
Tiger O
GT

& some dithers, all Juvis and I want to add 1 more to it. I have been looking at a Juvi Jag or I have just come across a Petsmart that had 2 tanks of Juvis, 1 was a Midas (about 4) or another was some Red Devils mixed with some JD's.

My question to the staff was they looked the same what is the difference? :confused: (yeah I should have known better, its petsmart, :duh: :duh: picture the Simpsons, where the teenage kid ask's "Ill have to get my manager", and the manager turns out to Beavis and Butthead morphed into 1 :y220d: ) So I have come back to the board where I get the real answers.



1) What is the difference between a Red D and a Midas?
2) who is the more aggro?
3) Size Difference?
4) Should I just get a Jag?
5) I know I cant get 2 but damn, you guys have some sweet looking Jags out there and I have had success with Red(s) in the past. (I am sure they were Reds, judging by the images of the Midas and Red's that you guys have posted, It Think....)

the difference is that rd have thicket lips while midas have a pointy snout.a pure rd will only get 12 inches max while a pure midas could reach 14 inches.U wont kno if u have a pure unless u get one from a cichlid specialist like jeff rapps.where all fish are wild caught.
 
In the hobby RD and Midas have been so cross bred they are almost the same fish. you can expect a good amount of aggression decent size 10"-14" depending on dominant genes and m or f. They grow quickly and may be intolerant of tank mates (as any large cichlid can be). Jags are great fish too. IME they grow slower but can be real monsters in your tank towards tankmates when they get bigger.

:iagree: I think u should get the jag because your cichlid community will last longer if u get the red it will take over half the tank for itself when it gets like 5-6 inches but the jag should not be as territorial like the devil well at least til it puts on some size.lol:grinno:

Hey Man, I just wanted to correct you on 2 things bro.

Midas cichlids don't have the pointy snouts, True red devils and the common hybrids do.
Pure Midas and the common hybrid sold in Lfs can reach lenghts of up to 16 inches. But yeah, between 12 and 14' is the average for males. ;)

Everyone one is going to say something slightly different I suppose depending on thier experience and what they have seen. :)

Actually he's already over stocked, adding another fish of either size would be waaaaaaaaaay overstocked.
 
i would be too worried about overstocking by adding another big cichlid........i think that would make a great tank just how it is..........
