Stores all order from wholesale for the most part so they aren't considered reputable.

Chris, the same vendor that you got your "pure" midas from (Gage/Conkel) also supply retail stores, and have for many years. Ditto to Jeff Rapps, and most of the other wholesalers out there that carry CA cichlids. They don't just sell to geeks on MFK.

When in doubt, check with the store to see where they purchased the fish from.

I am fully aware that they both supply retail store. But wouldn't you think its safe to say that the majority of stores get their cichlids from wholesale operations like Segrest Farms and not from sellers like Rapps/Conkel/Dan? I agree that asking the store is a good idea.

In this hobby, I don't think one should ever assume anything. Even up here in the middle of nowhere Canada, in a local Petland store (gasp) one can sometimes find fish from sources such as Jeff Rapps etc. Most big box chain stores can usually be ruled out as the vast majority of Petsmarts/Petco etc will indeed get almost all (if not all) of their fish from large scale wholesalers such as Segrest farms, where there will be no provenance back to anywhere.

But that still leaves a LOT of LFS that source their cichlids etc from other places. Hence the reason why I suggested to the OP to check with the store to see where they purchased the fish from.

I have seen some Midevils that were really beautyfull fish. All it means is you can't trace it back to a specific species. The Midas (Citranelum) and Red Devil (Labiatus) along with other members of the Midas complex have been crossed for so many years some of the currently recognized species within the Midas complex weren't even identified yet. So really who knows what's exactly in them. I wouldn't worry about it, enjoy it they are very cool fish.

I think it's funny so many people argue about this with no real proof that Citranelum and Labiatus have ever actually been cross breed, then publicly sold in large numbers. If it was sold to you as a Devil, that's what it is. It's a nice looking fish. Only way to sex would be to vent it.

It has been documented for some time. The Midas complex has been reasearched and studyed intensivly. We are not making this up as we go.

When one goes back to the original A. citrinellus, and A. labiatus that were collected & imported in the late 60's early 70's you will find that there was much confusion as to what was what, even by those such as the late George Barlow who was collecting & studying this genus in the wild. Back in the 1970's the scientific world was not nearly as educated on the amphilophus genus as they currently are, and yes, there were LOTS of fish sold into the hobby that were of mixed blood. This is exactly why today if you buy a large group of "red devils" from some of the big box chain stores, some will end up looking more like a typical citrinellus, and some will turn out looking more like a typical labiatus.

As Tom said, no one is making this stuff up, some of us have been following this genus & watching things unfold for many years. If you want to be even more confused, read the following sticky on this subject.

To be honest I could careless if I got pure or hybrids. I wanted a male with a small snout and a nice nuchal which typically fits the Citrinellus build.
