I would not advise it as a general rule, however given a big enough tank and the individual fish involved it could work. The needle fish would end up getting whacked I think.

Yes, he is the one. I don't know what his "vacation" tank was but my buddy that owned the LFS knew where he went and got him back. It took a while for him to get back to 100%. I think the guy that bought him was giving him feeders. I got him back on his normal diet, wormed him and he's all back to normal. It took a good month and a half to two months for him to come all the way back.
