We have 4 red devils {all very similiar to the one pictured} and they are beautiful.. i have tried to sex them in the past but still not sure who is who..since at various times all seem to get a huge hump.. sometimes their humps become enormous and then seem to go back to normal. The only way to sex them would be by venting..and really breeding is not a concern right now... We have everyone of them in a separate tank by them self and two in a shared tank with screen divider.. My question is ..is it possible to get a large enough tank that they can be in together or will the fighting between them exist no matter what size tank their in? I just thought it would be awesome to do a tank of these 4 red devils.. but if their lives would be in jeopardy i would leave well enough alone or if i had to go to an extreme size tank it would be out of my reach right now as room is a factor.. i can add a 125 or 190..but after that size would not be able to get into the room..weak!!!!

actually i heard that sometimes females get the hump. but i think the males are the ones that mostly get the humps. btw anyone know what that hump is called?

I think your both right about the Nuchal hump.. females if they do get it it is usually small... where in the male red devil it is pronounced at maturity.... the more i am reading on the subject of housing red devils together in one tank ..the more i think i better forget the idea.. it does not seem to matter the size of the tank they are in as much as who they are with...just plain mean towards each other... maybe i can take my big guy and put him in a 125 with a few large severums.. i have two that are growing good.. any other ideas please let me know..

Females do get a nuchal hump:

It's also been referred to as a nuptial ornament...made more pronounced during the breeding process.

It's sometimes called a kok. No joke.

Now one of my males really has blossomed haha

I believe the hump is developed along with a feeling of dominance. It is possible in a 190 but with them being so large if they didn''t grow up together it might not go well. If you wanna pack it with a few more you would probably be alright IMO
