Red Devil Woes... some general questions

Is it male or female? Either way, it's only 3"....give him a little time. Mine didn't become a Devil until 6-7".

Thanks for the welcome. Ive been poking my head around here for a while as a visitor

OK then, I'll have a look around into prices for those fish.

My tank isnt huge, around 46 Gallons, I'm planning on growing it up until its too big then passing it on to dads tank. Obviously as the RD matures its going to hate a firemouth/con in my tank if i get one?

just give the con or firemouth areas to hide that the devil can't get to. my cons like to play "tag" with my RD. every once in a while they'll sneak up and bite her on the ass, then get chased for a few laps around the tank before escaping into a cave. pretty entertaining.

he could be scared of something in the tank, re-decorate the tank and leave the lights off.

you need to bump up the HEAt and it natural for any cichlid to hide...he/she will get used to you in time

As suggested a couple tankmates will help bring him around.You could also try changing around tank decor. My RD did'nt start becoming aggro until about 5"-6".

Looking at his size again last night he is probably closer to 4inches.

The tank shift around i just tried, placed new rocks in for more cover and attempted to place his hidey hole rock against the back so he couldnt get in.

However he just swam into the cracks and kept trying. So to save him harming himself I pulled it forward. He does rearrange things in the tank often though, the weed never lasts long. Ill see how he goes over the coming weeks.

He seems to so far be thickening up alot and growing in length slightly. He is rather wide in girth though

when i brought my RD it was around 6 cm and even started feeding almost instantly when i added him

its growth was usual

Well I've taken his rock away. He isnt liking it at all. Now his new hiding place is the corner. Im considering just removing bit by bit of my tank until he realises he has nothing to worry about and mans up.

try to take everyhting out. try it for a few weeks. if that doesnt work then add some caves and add a con. also many fish are skittish while young itll turn out fine once he gets some size on him.
