Yup mealworms will be relished by your devil im sure! And sand will be fine. It may take the rd a little bit longer to chomp down the mealworms but he'll love em.

alot of the freshwater ponds and such here have sand and dirt and my old female rd was a wild caught and had sand in the spot i caught her so im sure sand wont harm an rd at all...they have fun moving it though

I will never use sand again, all the fishes secretions accumulate on the surface of the sand creating a real eyesaw, i was forever having to suck it up. And the dark greyish muck that builds up underneath is absolutely prutride. In summing up, IMO it's just to much work, but you can use it.
