red eye tree frog setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Back before those exo terra terrariums and foggers I used to keep them in a tank with a part glass top part screen and put a submersible heater in a glass jar for warmth and humidity and spray daily(15 yrs ago).
I used to have a male because he would call at night. These guys are awesome. GL.

after doing a lot of research i ended up getting a 12x12x18 exo terra tank. I know it small but that's all i have money for. right now i'm more looking to setup the tank and pick the frog later. but still want a red eye tree frog. I did make the false bottom and dirt background. now what i'm doing is setting up the waterfall. i'm kinda stuck. have the pump and the tube setup not much else. i ran out of expanding foam. no money to get more. i do have some ge type 1 sealer left. not sure if that will do the trick. other then that not sure what else i need for it. looked at a bunch of pics and how to's. not finding anything easy to make. any help would be nice

ps sorry if i sound new to this. i really am new to anything other then basic setup. please cut me some slack

Glad to see you went with the exo-terra setup. They look super clean and there not incredibly expensive. Don't forget to post some pics once you got everything setup the way you want. If your having problems with the waterfall I know that exo-terra makes a waterfall kit thats cheaper then wat it would cost to make one. I dont have any experience with them but I would assume they're good quality.

Red eyes dont really need a water fall and with a tank that small it is going to take up a decent amount of room. I would skip the water fall. Just stick with the back ground that it comes with. Simple is better with Red eyes some times. Add some live plants after you get the false bottom in and a water bowl. The water bowl is very very important for them.

A can of Great stuff foam is only about $4.00. I hate to say this but keeping frogs properly is not cheap.

i understand it's not cheep. i just want to keep it as cheep as i can. but anyway still looking for a few good easy ways to make the waterfall. not buy a premade one

I too would skip the waterfall. I would also take out the inside background and put it outside. These guys like to bounce around at night.

if i take the background out what would i use for the plants to hang on. i setting everything up with live plants and need them to hook to something. also i'm not looking for anything big with the water fall. just something for my fog to soak in that is easy to self clean(filter)

Your're dealing with a very limited amount of space. You might be better of with some sort of DIY drip system.
But really,
the simpler, the better.
Humidity is your most important factor here and a daily misting takes care of that aspect.

i totaly undestand a waterfall may not be the best thing for my setup. just looking for an easy way to see it in action. I'm not set on anything yet even what type of frog to get

Do you already have the false bottom/substrate in the tank?

You might want to decide what type of frog you are getting first. There are so many different kinds of frogs and a lot of them need different kinds of set ups.
You are essentially dealing with a tad over 10 gals of space. That really limits what kind of frog you can even house in it even before you take up room with a waterfall. Lots of frogs can not swim and will quickly down in a water fall.

A simplier back ground like cocofiber panels ( $1.99-2.99) would work, not take up much space and plants will grow up it. Most of my tanks at home do not even have back grounds and the plants grow right up the glass and cover it in a few months.

A red eye tree frog needs more than 10 gal of space, so do White tree frogs, Monkey tiger legs, all of the waxy frogs, gree tree frogs, cubans.
You might be able to get away with a clown tree frog or a couple of reed frogs.
