Howdy,

I was wondering if anyone keeps Myleus rubripinnis. I know most silverdollars are herbivores, but I read that these fellows are different. Any reports in a planted aquarium? Do they eat fry?

Thanks,
HarleyK

My red hooks were pretty peaceful but did go after some of my other smaller fish.

Im pretty sure thats what mine are theyre pretty timid, havent been with any fish small enough to eat though

I have kept them, treat just like silverdollars but a bit bigger. Even silver dollars eat small enough fish, if you doubt that drop a 4" one in a tank full of small guppies. You can't really expect a 10" plus omnivore to resist a 1 1/2" tetra no matter how peaceful it is.

These guys will eat ANYTHING. Flake, krill, pellets, fry, MP, plants, bloodworms, etc. Any fish bigger than fry they leave alone and are peaceful towards. Great schooling fish though. Fast enough and get decent size to be kept with predators too.

I could not keep plants in with my silver dollars. I am told that you can choose some plants that do not taste good to them and they will stay away. (could be a new thread question) I went with plastic.

Ive got five large red hooks in a 135 that also houses 18 small Pristella Tetras and they never bother them.

The only thing that I do NOT like about the red hooks is how skiddish they are, when I enter the room they freak out and slam against the glass. This also gets the loaches tetras and pictus cats freaking.

They LOVE bloodworms! I keep a pack of Silverdollars and really enjoy them. They have alot of "presence" and make the tank look active. I would like to tryr some of the red-hook variety someday.
