red-hook silverdollars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Howdy,

Since this thread has been revived, let me give you guys an update: I've had them for 12 weeks now:
  • they look great
  • they eat anything, from flakes to pellets to adult crickets to lettuce, to shrimp
  • unfortunately, they also eat my plants. Even Anubia. Check out my gallery and imagine about 1/10th of the plants left... if that ...
  • they do not eat all of my swordtail fry. At least half a dozen fry made it thru in the past three months, they're about 3/4'' now.
  • they are extremely skittish, despite of floating plants (which they eat) and cork bark and branched driftwood. Whenever there is movement in front of the tank they freak out, bang into the walls, knock my heaters out of their suction cups and leave a cloud of scales behind. That cannot be healthy.

Bottom line: I enjoy having them, but I would not get them again - for the above reasons.

Thanks Harley

I love my red hooks. They are skittish like you said, but they take comfort in the large, tunnel like driftwood I have in the tank. I have no real plants in the tank, but have floating plastic plants that help keep the tank dark. They usually just hide behind and under the decoration until it's "safe" again.

Thankfully, they have never harmed themselves trying to flee. And after a few seconds, they come back out from hiding.

I feed mine a huge variety of foods, and while I have seen them ingest small fish they seem to enjoy Hikari's floating cichlid pellets the most. They go up and crunch them to bits. So much so that the pike cichlid in the tank will wait for them to start crunching and then it starts collecting the broken pieces.
