red-hook silverdollars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a mixed school of silver dollars (red hook included). For awhile I had a TSN with them to go him up. They used to steal food from him! I'd see them swimming around with earthworms in there mouth, small silver sides etc.....
I've never tried live plants with them, but with the rate they ate, I'm sure they'd try.

About small fishes, my schomburgkiis love to eat wild-type bettas... And live shrimp. They're not preds, but they eat ANYTHING, including small fishes and inverts.

Best regards.

Daniel.

Howdy,

Thanks a lot for all the info and help, especially walls for his "experiment" ;) I went out and got a shoal of 6 red hooks yesterday. They looks great and seem very happy. What a beautiful species and great addition to my 220 gal. They eat food flakes like crazy. My gouramis didn't know what was coming when all 6 red hooks attacked the food :D

Thanks again, contributions like these are what makes MFK so great

My 1 redhook and 2 silver dollers love to eat algea wafers. Pretty cool to watch them play with them in their mouths. Personally though I'm a bigger fan of the black barred redhooks. Can't wait to get some of them. Congrats on your 6 redhooks.

How do you tell red hooks from silvers? like, i know the red hooks get the red hook on their anal fin, but at what size do they get this. Cuz the LFS has some silver dollars that almost look like they could be red hooks, no spots, red anal fin, but its not as red or pointy yet as red hooks. They are only about 2" to 3" max.

Howdy PP,

I just entered this field, thus, I am far away from being a silverdollar expert. However, if I understand it correctly, some varieties of regular silverdollars can simply have a red anal fin. Only the red hook has the hook. My smallest is 3'', and it has a very pronounced hook already. Maybe someone can chime in who bought them a bit younger.

Geez, two things I've learned over the weekend: These guys are skittish as hell. They drive the other fish crazy. I hope they'll calm down in the next few weeks. Second, they eat like cows. I will have to buy the jumbo flake food boxes in the future.

They do not touch Crypts nor Vallisneria nor water lettuce, but they seem to like fresh Echinodorus leaves. As compared to regular silver dollars, who eat every green in the tank. To me, the beautiful looks and the associated minimal reduction of plant-diversity are a compromize well worth it!

Congrats on getting a nice shoal of Red Hooks!! It took mine quite a long time to "relax" in the aquarium. But they do calm down.

I had to give up on flakes altogether after my Red Hooks got to be about 5". I swithed to Tetra Crisps, these seem to work best. I also feed the tank with Shrimp Pellets, freeze Dried Tubifex, and every once in a while chopped earth worms. While the worms are mainly for my Clown Loaches the Red Hooks will chomp em down as well. And they really seem to love the freeze dried tubifex. I break one of the "cubes" into about ten pieces that they can swallow and then put the other piece in for the rest of the tank.

I like these much better than the regular Silver Dollars. Once acclimated to thier home they do very well and add a nice bit of movemant to the tank.

Mine LOVE worms and will eat them like spaghetti and kiss in the middle, lol. They also fight over the cut fish I feed my preds. Not so hot on veggies anymore, they like the meat, but I try to give them veggie pellets for the nutrients.
Fairly tight schooling behavior and add lots of movement and activity to the tank.
