Red hump head geos???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beautiful fish! Look like another man made fish. Nothing wrong with it as long as it is not sold as pure speces.

It looks like Acaricthys heckelii with tumors on their heads. :( A. heckelii should not develop that under natural circumstances. The iridescent spots on the body and the long, trailing red extensions on the dorsal are otherwise indicative of the species.

Agree. Look a lot like heckelii

IMO they look like Gymnogeophagus labiatus Rio Olimar (or one of the other hump headed Gymnos) crossed with Acaricthys heckelii. The red coloration in the pics/vid is due to the Asian vendor having a red NAN light over the tank.

I was thinking more along the lines of hormones or selective breeding A. heckelii, they look very much the same morphologically as a pure Heckelii.

Reminds me of the goldfish strains that have heads like that, Pretty sure they are selectively bred.

They are line bred hybrids. It's pretty obvious.

That's where the nuchal hump comes from, then cross back & forth for a number of generations with Acaricthys heckelii to fix the other traits such as fins etc, and voila, a new frankenfish is born.

They are the new Geophagus based FH, gentler and kinder than the old Amphilophus based FH. OP, where is Monster Aquarium in NY. Is it an Asian LFS that explains the source.

They have nothing to do with FH, there's no flower line in these fish. They're just another Asian made hybrid. As someone else already stated they also appear to have albino Acarichthys heckelii, from Taiwan. (also quite possibly hybrids?)

And there's the problem, on this vendors facebook page they are listed as heckelii, which they clearly are no longer, they're a hybrid cross. People are already being confused by these Taiwan hybrids, which is exactly why the OP asked here before buying. Smart move on his/her part.
