Red Parrot Compatibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 3 parrots in with 4 other cichlids and a pleco. Everyone seems to get along.....for now. The other cichlids are only 2-3". I am sure things will change as they grow. Right now my FM rules the tank (sort of). The BP's seem to be oblivious to everything else that goes on. I inherited them and the pleco when I got the tank. I have added everything else since then. I love the parrots and there goofy demeanor, not monsters by any stretch.

there were a few colors at the pet shop but they were all listed red parrots.
like this green/white one, a orange one, and a bright red one.

and they were all the same size too.
also a heart-shape parrot?? one too

which is the best, or easiest to keep?

I would stay away from the multi-colored, "jellybean parrots". Most of the time they are dyed by humans to attain their colors. It is very inhumane. I am sure that a lot of people have many different opinions on hybrids. I love my hybrids and I love my "pure-breeds". I think that they have wonderful personalities. I DO have a problem when people "pimp their fish", ie. dye them or inject their heads with fluid to give them a bigger kok. The parrots will get along with most mildly aggressive cichlids, just stay away from the hyper-aggressive species. They are a wonderful fish.

parrots arent very aggressive
Your experiece may dictate it but these are cichlids so don't expect them to be peaceful all the time.

yeah i don't like dyes..
dyed fish=die fish

is the cream green one natural?
No. And buying "heart-shaped" ones is never encouraged. Those tails are rather chopped than genetically bred.:screwy:

:iagree: Thank you for adding that. A lot of people will go to extreme measures to sell their product. It's instances like these that give hybrids a bad image.

Not all of them have mouths that don't close either. I got this one out of a batch of "normal" parrots, which had the mouths that didn't close. If you are worried about it being able to defend itself, look for one with a more normal mouth.

nice find!

as a rule I do not care for hybrids - but with Blood Red Parrots - I do own 2 males and 2 females.

My 2 males are named Peek and Boo ...

When I first got them they would hide ...
Peek would cower behind Boo and when I would walk by the tank Peek would goose Boo and Boo would jump half out of his skin

Peek would do that every time ... until I got them some dithering fish to help distract them from outside activities...

just know that if they seem scared in their tank that dithering fish can help them get adjusted.
