Red saum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, probably should have quoted it ... it was Greenterra's post "The true question in this whole thread is whether the posted fish is a different strain? 53 posts so far and still not a shred of evidence provided by anyone to back it up.:("

There is also no proof that it isn't a completely differant species either (though as you said, I think it's same species as gold/silver saums, just differant color variants like many apistos, kirbs or Crenicichla have).

Just mentioning we can't provide evidence that is isn't a gold saum, or can't provide evidence it's a completely differant species until the scientists get off their duffs.

true, we cant scientifically say what this fish or isnt. very much the case with the controversial IT/ST's. in this hobby, getting concrete scientific support is not feasible or practical. so all we have in this hobby is to rely on the opinions of several experienced members.

at the end of the day it really doesnt matter anyway, its not gonna have some negatvie affect on the world. it just boils down to MONEY. money makes the fish go round :)

nice fish, but its definately no different than a regular gold saum. just so happened that a few of these showed some brighter colors out of the whole batch, they were seperated, marketed under a fancy new name and sold at a premium. reputable seller or not, it happens.
and as somebody said earlier, a healthy gold saum with good genetics will get a bright red as it matures. here's my little petsmart saum. cost me about $5 and is on his way to becoming a great looking fish

I got mine for $5 at PetsMart also, he's 3" now. But then again if I'd have had a guarantee he'd color up like this so fast I would've paid $50. So I think the OP got a decent deal and for $50 he can call it whatever he wants.
Interesting thread, I'm going to keep following it to see what you guys end up deciding, if anything at all.

Yes, you are right but I or We are not the ones giving an already named and known species(even if temporary)a new name. When you take into account the already confusing classification of GTs and Saums, adding a new marketing name for now is just irresponsible IMHO until the genus gets described correctly..If we except this sort of thing so easy...well ..I guess I have a Parachromis sp "Blue Dovii" as he is bluer then most and an Orange Devil because he definitely is not Red.Sound silly"yes" but it's the same concept IMO.If I was going to add a new name to a fish for sale I would hope I could prove why I was doing it. Just my 2 cents:)

I also want to add that I have not put anyone down for what they believe or anyones fish for that matter.I respect everyones opinion and am happy for them to be voiced as I have voiced my own.I look forward to the day when Saums are correctly identified and the end to the GT/Saum debate is here.:)

Red saums aren't really new though, the first one I saw was over 15 years ago, and it was called just a green terror. I actually saw two before I ever saw a silver saum, which I prefer anyway. We can a new name to the silver saum, so why not red saum?

I totally agree, the blue acara group is a mess and needs to be dealt with of our (the aquarist) sanity.

Do I think it's a differant species? No.
Do I think it's a differant color form like the silver saum (probably) is? Yes.
Would I pay more for it? Given the differances I've seen between the two red saums in person and gold saums? Yes.
Does any of it matter? Not really.

Which is what I think most of the posts have said really. If the OP is happy with the price, that's all that matters.

Even if they were all differant species (gold, silver, and red saums), by now they've been all inbred into a mess in our tanks anyway.
