Hi Everyone,

I've been a member here for quite a few years and loved to check out everyone's massive tanks and build threads. I had a 75G tank for the longest time and often dreamed of the day that I could up-size. Things seemed to get in the way and I always pushed the plan back. We bought a new house about 5 years ago and well with a new house, you need new furniture, so the tank had to wait... again You get the idea. :D

When my father passed a few years ago and I came into an inheritance I decided that this was the time to do it. I was going to go with a fully custom Miracles glass tank, coast-coast overflow, sump, custom stand and cabinetry. I was pretty close to pulling the trigger when I came across the Red Sea Reefer series of tanks. After weighing my options I decided on getting the Reefer 750XXL. It's basically an aquarium in a box complete with tank, stand, sump, plumbing and an ATO. I ordered it along with some other equipment and awaited its arrival.

Delivery Day!
The truck delivered the crate to our door and I got them to lower it into the garage where it would have to sit until I could call in the cavalry to come over and help me lift it into the basement.

I noticed that the MDF on one side suffered a hit during transit but there was luckily no damage inside. The tank was packaged extremely well.

The rimless tank dimensions are 71"L x 25.5"W x 23.5"H and 3/4" Starphire glass on the front and sides. The tank volume is 160G and the sump volume is 40G for a total of 200G. The quality of construction is just phenomenal. All edges are chamfered, the silicone seams are perfect and its a true beauty.

The sump and ATO are both ok. Its not the best design I admit but it certainly works for me for now.

The stand was really pretty crazy. You have to assemble it much like Ikea furniture. It took quite a while to get it together but I went slow and made sure I was doing it right. Didnt want to take any chances! Once assembled it is very solid and beautiful. Its made of HPL coated plywood, marine spec stuff and is very resistant to water. Its got a nice glossy appearance to it and has a pad that the tank sits on.

The Red Sea Reefer is a heavy beast. The pallet was 940lbs and the tank alone is 550lbs. Took 4 guys with suction cups to get it into the basement and up onto the stand.

Once up on the stand it was time to start setting up all the extra goodies.

I love my tech and wanted to incorporate it into this build. I had an Neptune Apex controller on my last tank that I moved over to the new one. I got two Ecotech Vortech MP40s and three Radion XR15 FW's. Heating is provided by two 500W titanium heaters controlled by the Ranco temperature controllers and backed-up up by the Apex. The return pump is a Neptune Cor20

Cable management will have to wait until I add water. :)

The tank was set-up last August and has been a real joy to own. Future plans? I definitely want to plant it but will most likely have to remove the Severum before I do that. I plan to remove the ATO tank that came with it also. As you could imagine with a rimless tank evaporation is an issue and I'm having to refill the ATO tank every 5-6 days now. That's ok until you want to go on vacation. :) So I'll need to come up with a more permanent solution soon. I have some ideas but just need to implement it.

Current stocking is as follows:

7 Clown loaches
5 Red Head Tapajos
1 Gold Spot Severum
L024 - Redfin Cactus Pleco
L027 - Xingu Royal Pleco
L075 - Peckolie Sabaji Pleco
L134 - Leopard Frog Pleco
L200 - High Fin Green Phantom Pleco

Thanks for checking out my thread. :)

Sweet tank, gear, scape and fish selection. Ive been wanting an l025 pleco for some time. Get some pics of those fish goin!

Always liked the looks of those red sea tanks. I attempted to order one of the big peninsula versions-tank only, but red sea politely informed me i get the whole package or nothing.

What kind of substrate are you using? Only reason i ask is i know the geos really like a sandy, finer type. Yours doesnt look too coarse though.

Freshwater on a reefer :duh:
Beautiful setup and nice stock. This is the exact tank I was planning to upgrade my reef to. Very similar gear we have as well.

Nice Set-up! I noticed in the last picture there seems to be tank lids/covers. How do you like the Radions?

You may have problems with the geos as well when planting it. Plants like bolbitis, java fern, etc will work but any rooted plants will likely get uprooted by the geos sifting through the substrate unfortunately.

Not that it matters too much, a tank done out with java fern and the like can look very beautiful as well. :)

It's a mix of PFS and gravel. When I first set it up and took the pictures it was about 50% gravel and 50% PFS. I admit it was initially too much gravel for the Geo's so I changed it to 75% PFS and 25% gravel. There is now plenty of space for the Geo's to happily sift it all day long. I still might take more out though as the sand seems to accumulate on the sides and the middle near the overflow has mostly gravel on the top. I'll thin it out in that spot I think and replace with more PFS.

Yeah I will most likely go with java ferns, moss and others that can be anchored or that I dont have to worry about the geos uprooting them. Plenty of options there! :)

Wow, that is quite the setup!
Thanks!

The only difference between this tank and a custom FW tank is that it has Reefer in the name.:shakehead

I really like them so far. They're plenty bright enough and the ability to customize the color/intensity is great.

I havent taken that many good pictures of the fish but will post the ones I do have. I'll post more soon!

sump is setup for skimmer compartment, ATO included. And honestly, who uses rimless tanks for freshwater
