Red Severum issues

It's those HIGH nitrates mate.
That is WAY to high IMO.
This is the reason why he is gasping for air, high nitrates limit the bloods ability to carry oxygen throo the body, thus why has is gasping.
Also high nitrates cause him to be larthargic too.
You need to do some water changes and get them nitrates down..

Yes, I agree, my nitrates are quiet high for were I would like them but I have just hooked up an auto drip system so they are coming down slowly. And I will try and 50% water change today to speed up reducking the notrates, but if member Kevstev fish is also doing it and is Nitrates are at 20ppm that is very liviable and low for nitrates and any fish shoudl be able to thrive in that for a life time. In fact I am not sure if its even possible to get Nitrates lower than that.

I have 2 in my 75 and they don't gasp at all, however they do eat like pigs lol. They are only about 1 1/2" though.

Yes, that excatly how mine does, but the funny thing is the other severum does not do this, neither does any other fish in the tank.

Hmmm. Well, like I said I have low nitrates so I know that's not it. It's probably not your prob either if no other fish are breathing hard. I'm considering a methylene blue bath for my Sev to see how he responds since I have doubts that it's 'normal'. However, if yours is eating fine and not flashing I wouldn't concern myself with it except maybe some extra water changes. Keep watch for additional symptoms. If I do a meth blue bath and there is any change I'll post here.

Yes,please keep my posted. By the way, what is Flashing and what is a methylene blue bath? what does it do?

Flashing=Scratching against gravel and/or tank ornaments.

Meth blue baths are helpful for some fungal, parasite, and bacterial infections. If done properly it's very mild on the fish. Doesn't do much for certain parasites like flukes, however. It also is used for ammonia poisoning and helps fish breathe better. How it helps fish breathe better - I forget exactly, but it has something to do with oxygenating the blood around the gill area. It has many uses, but never use it in the display tank.

Most people suggest keeping nitrates under 20! Discus keepers don't like them going over 10. 80 just seems terrible. How often do you do water changes?

Mmmm my sev pair never gasp for air, actually none of my fish do,I do water changes every other day,and my nitrates never go above 5.0.
I was always told,for nitrates 0.0 is best,if u can't get them that low,then nothing over 0.5!
I have great filtration with water changes and I'm able to keep the nitrates down..
There's some great advice above, but IMO I still think yr nitrates are too high mate!
Also with high nitrates,or gasping,I often here, but all the other fish in the tank are fine, this usually means they haven't been affected yet, give them enuff time and the others slowly start gasping too.
Just my 2cents worth, don't wana pee anyone off bein a newbie..hehe.

Thanks, great information, I had an idea that it was some type of scratching, but never heard of it referred as flashing.

View attachment 762073 my largest is about 8 to 10 inches mine don't gasp nitrates at 80 is pretty high
I really didn't think that nitrates at 80 ppm would be that big of a factor, maybe its my colleciton of severums that its effecting. Plus I noticed my water temp is pretty high at around 78-80 degrees, with no heater. Maybe that is also effecting there breating. They are eating regulary with a great appitite though. By the way those are some beautiful Red Severums you have, If you get tired of them I have nice home for them

I think I have to many fish to get the nitrates under 10. By the time I do one feeding the nitrates will shoot back up.

My nitrates have went down some, but what I think I may have to do is a 50% water change everyday until the level are under 10, then see if my drip system is keeping the nnitrates down. It does well for the ammonia and Nitrites, have to combat the nitrates.
Funny thing though, even after doing a 60% WC Saturday, and not feeding the fish for two days, the fish still seem to be gasping, and I am sure if it was nitrates was the probelm, that should have helped some.:wall:
