Red Severum

I agree with Craig_UK. The pair in the pic both do look like males. And it may be really hard to find a super red female.

In order to get more red severums, do you just breed a super red male to a gold female with red or super red gene? I got 2 super red males. I also purchased 2 gold females with little red, while their siblings that had a lot of red on them.

Yep.

Simple as this.

Pick a male with very good markings all down the flanks (like my green, where the trait is more common, due to it being a natural colour)

Breed with a well marked female gold. Wash, rinse, repeat until the males are as colourful as the ones we're getting nowadays.

i wager there are NO super red females, but some well marked gold females which are basically, a by product.

Stunning fish the old super red, but not to my tastes.

Why in the bottom pic is his face so long? Hybrid or optical illusion?

My question is has anyone successfully bred a red severum. I have a Red and a Gold that have bred a dozen times and it seems my male is sterile as the eggs always turn white after 24 hours. Rumor is they are line bred in singapore and are almost always male. Wonderful Fish though!!!

Had the same question for a while now. I'm a big severum fan (got two reds, among others) and have done extensive homework. I have never, I mean never, come across a success story. I almost gave up my reds because I don't want anything "unnatural".

Can somebody please tell me a success story? Don't start with "I heard my friend's neighbor's cousin's ex had some luck".

I'm jealous. I wanted a pair of reds but couldn't find any. I settled on a pair of golds instead. I'm still happy though as the golds have turned into a couple of clowns. :)

Don't be... I thought green sevs were boring, gold sevs were better looking, rotkeils were more colorful and red sevs looked the best. I got one green just to have a complete collection, but believe it or not, it's my favorite now!

I'd say "personality" is the most important thing for sevs...
