Red tail catfish question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have redtail in my4x2x2 and he was 20 inches and gave him to fish shop.5 months later i bought 7x2x2 and went back to shop and he still had the fish so got him back and is has only grown 2 inches but i recomend feeding once a week.as youngsters they grow quick up until about 15-18 inches and then again that depends on how often u feed him.with a baby redtail i would suggest 3 times a week.

Catfish growth does generally slow down at 12 inch, and your not supposed to feed them as much when they reach this size, because they dont use up enough energy through movement or growth, so they have too much protein waste in their bodies.

rtc's are lazy cats by nature

if theyre not at rest they usually just cruise at a low speed.

not that they have to much protein waste in there body

but they produce to much high protein waste :WHOA:

and if you over feed an rtc they will regurgitate everything and cause a nightmare in tank maintanence.

i would not say lazy
preserving energy is a natural state of mind for allmost all predators

I tried that on my boss, I almost got fired.

:P well, not so much the "all predators" part, but the "I'm Preserving Energy" part :P I like reading forums :)

That is one huge red tail!!!!!

DeLgAdO even if the red tail does not swim about much and 'preserves energy', it will have used a lot more energy in its growth from baby to 12 inch than it ever will again. After that they will not use as much energy because they are not growing at such a fast rate anymore, and as a result they can die through having too much protein in their bodies which they are not using up and goes to waste.

Hmmm, I have never seen one slow down unless from sickness at 12". More like 18-24" for the ones I have kept. After they slow down I feed every other day, then after they get bigger feed like 1 time every 3 or 4 days! Less than that and they start to try and eat everything they can see. Although it's funny to see the shape of a filter intake through one's side it's worrysome until they throw it up. how big is that redtail in that pic. It looks huge and like they caught him fishing, I know it is probably not more than 97 lbs. because that's still the current record, i gues the camera angle is playing tricks on my eyes! nice find though!

welcome to mfk twisted. How big is it right now? If small blood worms, krill, silversides. As he gets bigger i would suggest market shrimp/prawn. Read my catfish sticky when you get the chance! Good luck and post pics!
