Red tail giant gourami then and now

 • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
didnt you have a silver aro with yours? how did that work out? I ended up having to rehome the aro

They were always fighting and neither is backing down. They are now in separate tanks in the garage just flipping fingers at each other lol.

thats funny. it was really cool when mine would fight...they would just circle each other and it seems like that would just go on forever.

This fish is the reason i got into big tanks. I new i wanted one and after a few years finally decided (and convinced the wife) i could get a large enough tank to house one.

Nice looking GG! Male or female? Looks male for being too pointy.

I am still grooming mine (a leucistic giant, female non-RTGG) to reach 60cm or more. She's now approaching 55cm. I heard RTGG's don't get to 60cm so I didn't get one here that maxes out at 48cm currently. How I love to get that one too and try with mine. I'm just certain that tsunamis will erupt once they see eye to eye. Mine worked with an arowana, too. The GG and the aro worked flawlessly for 3 months until I went for a long vacation.

Yeah i was thinking male based on the dorsal fin. (can any one else chime in here?)

Its not just silver fish. In my case the RTGG has been housed with bichirs and a BGK which he ignores, a green terror and a silver aro. The aro and him would get into it all the time. The GT would attack the RTGG on occasion too, but never the silver aro. As soon as the aro was out of the tank the GT and the RTGG went at it for maybe 2 days straight. The GT (about half his size) became submissive and runs away when the RTGG gets in a grumpy mood.

The aggression isnt constant enough to harm the GT and the GT is faster and can hide under driftwood. Even so I have been thinking about adding another cichlid or two just so the gourami has more than 1 fish to chase around...but then, adding another fish might cause more problems and not solve the one i have which is minor.

Awesome fish! Is this red-tail thing some kind of special breed? Where to get those beauties?

How do those big gouramis act together with catfishes and really small fishes? Can this work or wil they just kill them? Looks like you still have some plants left as far as i can see?

Greetings

It is a separate species from giant gourami - Osphronemus laticlavius. They can get to be around 20 inches long but they are pretty tall fish.

He can get a little aggressive with my green terror, but the green terror is quick enough to get away and small enough it can get under some driftwood if the gourami is in a bad mood. until recently i had him housed with an asian upside down cat fish but i gave that cat fish away. Actually the 8 inch catfish chased the gourami away when he got too close...outside of that he has not been housed without catfish, but i assume as long as the catfish isnt too small, it should be ok with him.

I have never done much with plants in my aquarium. I a long time ago i put some java moss in and it started growing on my driftwood. The gourami ignores that, but he does like when i feed him vegetables. I would assume he would eat most plants.

Here he is with a grape:
