Female - black part on dorsal fin and color, Festae - black spot on back not covering entire area and the Y shape of the front black stripes.

^ I agree.:)

Chances are your lfs will not be able to get you the Male Festae, unless you have a very knowledgeable LFS near you. I have put in special orders before, and got fish that were so far off from what i ordered, i left without buying the fish.

If you want a really nice Male Festae, search on our forums in the marketplace, i have seen a lot of males for sale recently!

tangledupincichlids.com has guarenteed males sometimes too!

The same thing happened to me. I ordered a Jaguar and got a Loiselli. The fish store guy said (when I told him it was a Loiselli) "Well, it looks like every other Jag I've ever seen.". I bought it anyway as it was on my list of "must haves".

To phillybob, go with tangledupincichlids, you won't be disappointed.;)

definately a festae, 80%sure its a female, lets hope she gets that deep red coloration between those stripes. great pick up.

it luks like a female festae to me, and $20 is a sweet deal for that fish, it's going to be a looker

Its a female festae The stripes will come and go . Good luck getting a male.

What a pity it died yesterday. it is all my fault. she is living with one midas and two oscars in my 125 g tank was bullied by the midas. I had two green terrors in this tank too, but one died due to the harassment of the midas, I moved the other green down to basement to live with my four rbps, the green terror has been happy for 2 months with the pirahas there. So I caught the red terror and put in the RBP tank too. she is the biggest one in the tank at 5", RBPs are only 2". She looked fine after I put her there. But two hours later, when I went to basement to check her out, she was dead at bottom, part of her body eaten by RBP. I dont know whether she died due to moving or was killed by the rbps. But she was the biggest one there, I also have a few feeder fish in the tank for the RBPs. Anyway, I felt very sad for her.

3-4" and bought for $20. Here is one more picture with black strips.

The fish was a female Uropthalmus...AKA Mayan cichlid...not Amphilophus Festae. The fish farmers in Florida call the Mayan Cichlids "red terrors" further complicating the issue of common names when it comes to selling them to local fish stores.
