Small Festae don't always display their bars. If that's the case when you get there tomorrow, look at the Ocellus (the eye-spot on the tail). If it's all above the lateral line, it's a Festae. A Uro's ocellus will be half above and half below the lateral line. GL...

Yep, exactly. All festaes of both sex should have y bars, uros won't have any.

Actually males may only display their bars when stressed, showing aggression or breeding. Normally they don't show their bars. Mine was usually gold, green and red with blue dots.

First pic...male with flash. Second pic, same male no flash. No Y-bar on either.

At the lfs I am supposing if it was male, it should be stressed out. You know how lfs are with fish....... There was a lfs called "Exotic Aquarium" up in Sacramento who had a big male festae for sale last summer and showed its Y bars, it was probably stressed. And if the festae was indeed a male, it should be easy to tell apart from a mayan easily. There are some cases when males festaes have their y bar clearly showing all the time.

Here's a picture of my 4" Festae and one of a Mayan I pulled off the web. Now look at the spot at the base of the tail. A true Festae's spot will only be half the size of that joint there, positioned as mentioned before above the lateral line (imagine a line splitting the fish head to tail) Now a Mayan's spot will 3/4 of the size of that joint, and extend below the lateral line.
