Red Texas project

That's a great looking Carpintis cichlid you have there. I like how yours has such big pearls on it's body. I recently bought some from "Wetspot" on aquabid. They claimed them to be the Escondido Carpintis and even told me that they had big pearls. But when I received them, they have such tiny pearls, nothing compared to the size of your Carpintis. I hope it's because they're still young and that the pearls will grow as the babies grow also? Anyway, back to your project, good luck and I hope to see the outcome of the fry :)

What's up everyone. I'm sorry that I haven't been giving you a constant updat on my project due to my busy schedule and moving, but here are some photos I took the other day. These guys are about 11months old. I will try to update more often. Hope you all enjoy.

Very nice thread and solo work Sir! A link to our thread was on the first page but it was with a cyano and parrot. We had some nice turnouts. Currently we have another project going like yours with carpintis and bp. Once again, good job on your project because I know how stressful it was waiting on faders.

Hey thanks crush! Means a lot coming from experienced hobbyist. I'm still working on the project but haven't had any luck finding any fertile RT's from my F1. Got any tips on sexing and finding fertile m/f? Also they have been growing kinda slow. I might need to expand. They are still in my 125gal. Anyhow. I'm hoping to get really red color RT for my "A1" RT project. Any pointers as far as variation in pairs ex. Male or female RT paired with male or female BP or Red devil? Thanks again! And good luck with your next project.

Hey no prob man. The females tend to have a black blotch just like female carpintis. Your patience will be tested when it comes to fertility checking... Out of all the ones we wanted to keep and breed, we ended up with 1 fertile female from our superbowl spawn. Some bro and sis paired up and we just accepted them as sterile when no wigglers were present but when you do that the male or the female could still be fertile. So that's not the best way to "test" them. Try to pair them with pure breeds that way you will know. Some people have enough patience to try 3 times with a pure... I don't. After 1 shot its on to the next one. Some will get aggressive and need space and that will cause you to want to move them along before they get tested. As far as growth... While growing out, none of our fish were ever housed in anything bigger than a 90 gallon. Changing water often compensated that. Good luck with yours and just know that the testing is the most frustrating part of the project. Can we see your f1 keepers?

Sorry I forgot to answer a question... What they get paired with for the testing is up to you. But when u find that fertile one, it then is up to you on how you want to mix your recipe. I have bp, rd, and a texas pair that I'm going to split for testing. But when I find a fertile one, yes the ultimate plan is to breed back to another rt.

Cool, thanks for all the helpful information. Here are some pics of the only fertile male that I have found. Well the first and only one I've ever tested. He is paired with what looks to me like a mid-evil (Midas x red devil for those that don't know). When I did a water change I found two wigglers and didn't even know they had spawned. I was out if town when this happened so I don't know what happened to the rest. I haven't seen them since the water change. Currently working on getting them to spawn again. Enjoy.
