Red Tiger Mota in new tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So just an update, I had to get rid of the Freddy , believe it or not even being smaller than the red tiger she beat him really good and tore up his fins, I ended up finding a friend who took her, ever since though he doesn’t come out anymore and he’s very shy again, doesn’t eat in front of me anymore and is always hiding, like having an empty 90 gallon lol it’s been about a month him being alone, if he continues like this I might change the idea of the tank

Try adding some dithers like silver dollars, danios, rainbows, even convicts. They should entice him to come out more.

Doesn’t work with this guy, I’ve tried convicts, tinfoil barbs, silver dollars, he has them hiding in the corner until he kills them, I had thrown in a while back about 3 female convicts and they were gone by end of day

I can see where that may be a problem.
I guess the only other option is to wait for him to come out more when he feels like it.

Looking through your other threads my suggestion if you don't want to keep him solo for life would be to move the RTM and TSN to your 180. He most likely won't view the bigger catfish as competition and the larger tank should make him come out more. Adding a few similar size/age cichlids might also work by spreading out the aggression. Honestly though the best solution is probably keeping him solo or get a female and keep them divided.

Thanks for the advice, that catfish from my old thread is no longer with us , got butchered by an 18 inch ornate bichir, had his stomach ripped open one morning I was really upset to see it happen, I’ve thought about putting him in the 180 with other similar aggression cichlids but im afraid it’s gonna turn into constant aggression all the time, I agree him being alone is probably best, maybe if I can find a female red tiger but even then I’ll still need a divider if I know this guys personality, my next solution is moving him into a 75 gallon tank by himself and using the 90 for something more interesting

Man that sucks to hear, wouldn't expect a bichir to do that. I had to keep all my rtm pairs divided, I may have mentioned this before but the one time I made the mistake of trusting them after a successful spawn the male permanently damaged the female's swim bladder overnight.

A youtube channel I like called Andy Woods Cichlids (who is also a member here Andy woods cichlids uk Andy woods cichlids uk ) has solo pairs of all the most aggressive CA cichlids - red and blue dovii, umbee, jags, haitiensis, freddys, RTMs, etc. The RTMs are the only pair he has to keep divided.

That’s interesting to hear, I can definitely see why he keeps them divided
