Red wolf - tank footprint?

No problem! They're great fish, very personable almost like puffers. They seem to pop in my locals (usually only 2 or 3 per shipment) from spring to around august, they don't get captivley bred so they're all wild, if any of your LFS gets SA oddballs and the like they should get em around then.

Fun thing to do with these guys when they're young is hand feed, I played tug of war w/ mine with earthworms once a month haha now he just snaps em in half if I try to pull back

If you're looking for quiet filtration, I'd recommend looking at canister filters and using the spray bar return positioned below the water level. That way, even if your water level is 6" below the top of the tank, the water's returning under the top of the water level, so there's no splashing noise.
 
Fluval u would be a lot cheaper though. And do I need a canister for a single wolf?

You can never overfilter a tank. If you're looking at a Fluval U, a quick search says a U4 is about $70. You can find canisters in that price range as well, so it's really up to you. A canister will allow for you to be able to upgrade in tank size later if needed, without needing to upgrade the filter.

Also, keep in mind that predatory species are harder on filters as they're typically messier eaters. Just something to keep in mind when looking at filter capacities (and flow rates/GPH) while comparing them.
 
To keep nitrates under 20 ppm w/ a fluval U3 in a 30 gallon would be 2 30% WCs a week but that was with a 4 inch Ornate bichir, i bet a canister would lessen the need but the U3 is only in the 50$ area and did my tank fine. I was feeding mostly worms at the time, breaking wolves to pellet is tricky but mine eats about a dozen medium sized cichlid gold pellets a sitting at this point.

I dont mind a bunch of WCs, I dont like seeing my tanks get messy anyway haha
